Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

Perhaps I'm just a bit dense. When you say "score 200 words" what the heck does that mean?

Gregg Easterbrook. Author of the weekly Tuesday Morning Quarterback column referenced in the post I quoted.

Ha, ya, I'm not sure what was missed here...

Peyton isn't the best QB, but ya, certainly most valuable. Guess that happens when you assemble this poor of a team. When's the last time an NFL team gave up 60?

An easy situation or situations that write themselves, so TMQ doesn't have to come up with real work.

It upsets me to see the Colts do so horribly.

It just lends credence to the "year of the quarterback" mentality that says that football is no longer a team game. It's jus a razzle dazzle game where the QB is all that matters. I want to refuse to believe that it is possible for a QB to be THIS important.

Maybe the Colts were a 4-12 team with Manning this year? *sigh*

The Saints should have gone for 70. I don't even know if 70 has ever been scored by a team since the first Super Bowl was played.

There was a game with the score of 73-0. This was in the 1940 NFL Championship game between the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins. The Bears won the game 73-0.

So you're saying it hasn't happened then? It would have been a terrific slap to the Colts' faces to see it happen. I don't know why, but that team has always bugged me. Maybe it's the whole North Stars thing.

To explain further: TMQ frowns on punting, especially if a team is down big and has nothing to lose (check) or has somewhat of a field position (check.) Expect a blurb about it in this week's column.

It isn't the year of the quarterback, Indianapolis is an extreme case. They have neglected the backup quarterback position for years and now they are paying for that mistake. Peyton Manning is great and regardless of what Indy did for a backup, they would be in tough shape but it wouldn't be this bad if they actually tried to develop a backup.

I think the bigger question at this point is how the hell did the defense get so bad that they give up 65 point in a little over 3 quarters?

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

Hell, Manning is on the sideline calling plays. Mainly because their OC is a figurehead and Manning never took himself out of games until week 16 and they would try to lose on purpose.

On top of that, they've drafted like the Millen-era Lions the last 2-3 years. They were going to struggle to win more than 8 games this year anyway. That defense is old and not very good.

That defense has speed, not power, they're designed to be playing with the lead when a team HAS to throw and their edge rushers can attack. Without a lead, their style falls apart and they get manhandled. Not to mention they end up on the field too much.

They may not win 8 games in two seasons.

The team lost Gary Brackett and he was the QB of the defense. It's hard to play when you lose both your offensive and defensive leaders if you are Indy.

New Orleans just scored another touchdown.
