The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

I loved that as he fumbled the snap and had to throw the ball away which probably killed any chance they had of tying the game, meaning that they would gag away another game in dramatic fashion, Tony Romo was able to laugh. I'm sure his teammates were laughing, too. Cowboy fans also.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

It's amazing how good he can look up until the point his team really needs him. Anyway, it's laughable that Sanchez will get credit for a "comeback victory" in this one.

Hate to say this, but I could definitely see the Jets in the AFC championship game again...maybe against the Ravens.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

Really, so any other NFL city would review the AP situation differently?

NY maybe. They are ruthless. I haven't seen too many cities/states like MN, though. The "one of us" factor is a huge part of that (while this doesn't include AP, you know where I'm going with this in the big picture). Most places I've heard from are picky, as sports fans typically are. MN? It's game by game at best. Sometimes it's inning by inning/quarter by quarter. It's insane.

There's no "rebuilding." It's either Super Bowl Homeboy or Bust. MN is the extreme of the fandom of a sport, I suppose. You have the moderates: we'll get better at some point! aka Chi, StL, Balt; then you have the we're awesome, like NE, IND, PIT. You have the flipfloppers: MN, Dallas, NYG, maybe even SD. Love or hate. No inbetween. That's all.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

You've still not explained how that's different anywhere else - especially relative to AP. Mauer, maybe but name a local athlete of his "prominance" that played for the home team that didn't also receive similar local recognition? I'm not defending said views per se but questio that it's really that different elsewhere.

I think MN is more reactive in a quicker manner. Let's say the NY market judges on a game's performance. MN judges on a quarter. Or inning. Or period. Very impatient, or optimistic, depending on how the team does.

There's no half-full or half-empty. It's either CHAMPIONS! or BURN EVERYTHING, in a very short amount of time. NY is more vicious, but they don't call for change directly as quickly as MN, IMO. The "one of us" thing.....that just buys that player some extra time when things go bad.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

I'm asking for specific examples of say an AP or Mauer that would in several markets demonstrate drastically different fan results for similar situations.

Jeter and ARod seem ok. Even in Brett Favre's last years in GB, the blind faithful overruled the ARodg fans. NYG? And Eli? They are on the fence with him. That's the closest I can come to, to compare MN. They either want to hang him, or make him a hero, but until he does, well, whatever, it's up for decision. That's the best I can do off the top of my head.

TMQ decrees that the Football Gods will punish EODS at some undetermined time in the future for doubting the credibility of TMQ.

(Insert distracting picture of generic Maxim model/cheerleader here)

It really comes down to those unrealistic movies put out by the Jews in Hollywood and all that wasteful nonsense whenever anyone gets a police escort.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

Maybe things have changed a bit in recent years, or maybe the Internet has changed the volume of the whiners (as it has everywhere).

My memory of Minnesota sports fans (from growing up there until my last summer living there- 2005) has always been that most hockey fans, Twins fans and all 30 of the Timberwolves fans were always a rather level headed and accepting bunch. Not Terribly reactive, perhaps unburdened by lack of expectation- even the Twins.

To me, and maybe this is because I grew up a Cheesehead among Vikings fans, I've always noticed the impatient nature among them that you guys are talking about. The boastful hopes of the pre-season ("Antoine Winfield is going to put us over the top!" -2004) compared to the self-pitying rage that would come into play once things went south (usually best seen in the annual "fire Green/Tice/Chili" crowd that shows up whenever they aren't a playoff team. There's always been that element of fandom to the Vikings, ever since I started paying attention to it. I think the gut-punching playoff losses combined with constant rumors of either getting a new stadium or moving have that kind of effect, which is why I always thought the Vikings fans were like that, and not the Twins fans.

It's actually kind of sad to see that you guys say that Twins fans are becoming more like Vikes fans and not the other way around.

I would think Pujols and Fielder could play out like AP/Mauer.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

I'm glad the Bears won yesterday because they have a brutal start to the season. ATL, NO, GB is not exactly easing into a season. Week 4 is the Cam Newton lead Panthers.

Tony Romo has to be the stupidest QB in football. He's like the ultimate anti-clutch player. Meaning, whenever the game's about to be put away by Dallas, he goes and does something stupid to put the opposing team right back in the game. I can't believe Jerry Jones keeps putting up with this. He reminds me a lot of Neil O'Donnell. With a guy like Favre, you knew he was doing that because he'd already made the Hall and no matter what he did idiot sports announcers would rave about it. I don't get what Romo's deal is. What kind if bozo fumbles on the 1 yard line in the 4th quarter with his team about to put the game away? All you do in that situation is not fumble. That's it. Especially when you can see the defender coming after you. Unbelievable.

You really don't know much about Brett Favre do you? He was doing stupid **** from day one...he just had enough success doing it in his earlier years that he kept doing it and kept winning enough games. There is a reason they called him a gunslinger. At one point early on...the coaches actually took a vote on who to start, Favre or Brunell and if I remember correctly, Brunell actually won, it was close and Holmgren decided to stick with Brett...the rest is history.

I did think seriously about Favre when making my Romo statement. And believe me, I was as sick of him as everybody else over the last 10 years of his career. However, in his prime for every stupid pass Favre threw half the time it worked out and half the time it didn't. Romo is supposed to be in his prime now, and I don't think he's come close to achieving those odds. Worse, he invents new ways to lose games. Forget about mere picks (Favre's MO). If he's not getting himself clobbered with a foolhardy scramble, he's fumbling the snap on a critical yet basic extra point that drove his coach (Parcells) into retirement once and for all.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

I'm not sure entirely when it started, but the Hank Williams Jr. song is consistently getting more obnoxious every year. I'm beginning to forget what it was like to enjoy it.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

Yeah, Favre isn't a fair comparison. For the prime of his career, the good far outweighed the bad to a degree that Romo hasn't touched yet. Romo's good, but only good enough to get you to the playoffs with the right team around him. He can't carry a team much further than that.
