The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

The truth is, as a league we don't have much to offer an airline partner. But that doesn't mean someone shouldn't identify the best potential parter (which seems to be Alaskan Airlines, from what the previous posts say), and go to them with the little we do have to offer and see what they can give us. Offer some, arguably low value sponsorships, some guaranteed ticket sales, to get some minor discounts on flights, and some considerations for potential short-notice travel for the conference tournament and its a win.

No one expects to get a bunch of free flights, at least no one with a shred of common sense. But even if we can get a little something, its better than nothing.

Thanks. You stated my thoughts even better that I did on my original post.
Certainly with a little creative thought from both sides there is some mutual benefit to all parties involved.

Well the WCHA has at least a few things to offer: Air time during games on the streaming service, a title sponsorship for the Final Five, the weekly radio show, in arena advertising. It's not huge but it is something.

I'm not jumping you, JJ, but you brought up the reasonable categories, so: 1) numbers? [the league has them] — I bet there's not enough; 2) absolutely, this is their best property; 3) does anyone listen? I don't, and I get an email about it every week; 4) another get —*best to require it on-ice near the WCHA logo.

It's all worth going after, and I sure hope that the league has done it. As always, just because it hasn't surfaced doesn't mean that it hasn't been discussed. But if we come up with a way-cool idea, it is going to get noticed. I know that people around the league watch these forums, and the chances are that some of you know that, too.

I think the creation of WCHA.tv is a perfect example of the league listening to the fans posting here.

I think that's why Shirtless Guy, Flashy, NMUFan, myself, and some others routinely try to offer ideas and thoughts. We know that a few eyes will see it.

I don't have the numbers of course, I was just stating ideas to use. I was a marketing major, what are these numbers you speak of? ;)

aparch, your questions about Soo Greyhounds attendance and what kind of effect that it might have on LSSU games got me to thinking about that in greater terms: what hampers hockey attendance at our 10 schools? At UAH, it's three things: Alabama football, Auburn football, and Huntsville Havoc hockey, in that order. The first two sap our fan base during football season, and I'm sure that this is true to an extent in the Michigan and Minnesota schools. (It may actually be the reverse at BG if they're smart in scheduling football and hockey, which I bet that they are.) I have read that deer season is a factor.

You know me, I'm always rolling around some idea or other. Sometime I'm going to find that Excel spreadsheet I started that compared UAH home attendance to UAT and AU home football games / quality of team. The Mike Shula years at BAMA really weren't that bad to us ...

How hard would that be? Stencil the AKAirlines logo next to WCHA logo? All the streaming games in the league would drop a 30 second spot, before games, in between periods, and at end of the games? Maybe ask to sponser first puck drop? Ehh, i'm not the logistical genius' you gentlemen are, but, it never hurts to ask. :)

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

I do know that the UAA radio broadcast will use "This Week in the WCHA" during intermissions, so I know somebody listens to it.

Hard? Not very, but the spots would have to be run locally, as the arena pumps the broadcast to AmericaONE. Also, some schools are great at these things, and others aren't (UAH).

For the UP, it's high school football until November. HS Football is very big up here, not quite Texas legendary, but it's the sport to play outside of Houghton, MQT, or the Soo.

For MQT and Houghton, they then have HS hockey that competes against them until March. As for the Soo, they (from what I've just learned in the LSSU thread) are pretty well saturated with hockey in the winter; I don't quite see Soo Canada being too big of a draw for the Michigan folks. The casual fan may go for a game or two, but it doesn't seem like a big following of Laker fans turned Greyhound live in Michigan.

Marquette has also been the home of an NAHL and a Tier III junior team the last few years. If they've "poached" any former Wildcat fans, it's only because those fans still think NMU should move back to Lakeview Ice Arena to capture the "Glory Days" of 1991. Oh, and because Lakeview sells beer where the Berry Events Center on NMU's campus is dry (except for the donors room when made available). If you want to watch pre-pubescent boys beat the sh*t out of each other and drink $2 beers, you weren't going to be coming to NCAA hockey games.

I use the word "compete" because my experience almost a decade ago is that the local schools don't really put up giant numbers that would take away from the NMU fan base, it's just that there is enough to tap out the disposable income of some casual fans. At NMU, it's $16 each for a ticket... while it may be a median (or slightly below median) in the WCHA, a "family of four" would need to spend $64 just on tickets to attend the game. Dropping a C-Note on tickets, parking, and food for one game isn't top priority for the fans. Not without some return. ((This is where I digress into another topic about cheap/easy promotions that the University could/should be running, many of which I've posted for the last decade on this forum, but this is my feelings on THAT topic... Typing Frustration .gif ))

I've posted the season records versus average attendance, and there doesn't seem to be a correlation between the two. I think it has more to do with the cost of tickets going up at NMU and the lack of benefits to season ticket holders or promotions for fans to show up.

I'm slightly getting off track, but one more big issue I have with NMU is how the sponsorships are handled. If the hockey department works out a deal to get sponsorship from local businesses (or even regional businesses), the income is then shared with ALL sports at NMU, not just the hockey department. I really think that there needs to be changes where a large portion of the sponsorship goes to the sport that attracts the sponsor, unless that sponsor wants to split their donation across all sports.

TL : DR - High school sports skim off the top of the attendance, but bigger economic issues are at the heart of why attendance is down for the UP schools.

BG's avg. attendance dropped around 400 this year, with a better team on the ice and tight league finish.
losing all those visiting fans from Oxford, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Columbus, and South Bend didn't help. we're surrounded by big hockey programs with lots of fans who travel, and not playing any of them. we did get OSU in for a game, but on a tuesday night. bah.
at least one home game was head-to-head with men's basketball.
and this week's home playoff series, the students will still be out on break.

I've frequently noted that the last season BSU was in the Glas (the year after the Frozen Four run when they got off to a 11-1-1 start and were ranked top 5), the only two non sell outs were the opening of deer season when they hosted RMU.

I'm guessing that would be an NCAA rules violation. There are pretty strict rules in place regarding advertising on uniforms. To the best of my knowledge, that changed most recently in the early 1990's when the NCAA limited the size of even uniform manufacturers' logos. Lots of teams had to cover over the logos because they were too large to conform to the new policy. I've attached a few photos below. CCM and Custom Crafted (a jersey lettering company out East) seemed to be the biggest problems on the back hem with some teams having to add one or more patches to cover over the logos. I'm also guessing that changing the name of the league to the "Alaska Airlines Western Collegiate Hockey Conference" won't "fly" either. If it were within the rules I'm sure some D-I football or basketball conference would have done it by now.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

@johnsonsjerseys...I believe when gfmorris said "best to require it on-ice near the WCHA logo" he meant on the ice, not on the jerseys. Nobody wants our guys to look like the European pros or nascar drivers.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

The NCHC went for free streaming this weekend and WCHA is charging $9 for everyone including those that paid for the season pass. Ouch.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

The Glas seating capacity was also around only 2400.

And that's relevant how? My point was: In the most BSU hockey mad time in the program's existence, the only weekend that they didn't sell out the building was the opening of deer season - proving Geof's point.

You know, it really is a shame I turned down the NMU play-by-play job a decade ago, if for no other reason than it would have saved us from you making an *** of yourself for all these years.
