The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

The Alaskas have to realize they are lucky to be in the league. Yes they make 7 trips down below, but only because they have no choice. But I do find it funny when fans who never make the trip chirp about it!

We don't complain about traveling, we complain about you complaining about traveling.

And, every WCHA school is lucky to be in this league after realignment left every one of our programs standing in the wind with its dick in its hand.

The travel is what it is. It's no fun for anyone, whether from Alaska or the lower 48. The funny thing is, like RapidsCity said, most of the travel complaints come from people who don't do the travelling.

Point totals (with winning percentages factored in for tie breakers)...and then all of the various ways to break ties...thus, seeding for teams 3 through 9...this was Tweeted by BSU Sports Information earlier today.

To Shirtless' point, there maybe millions of combinations of points and tie-brekers, but many of those combinations result in the same seeding arrangement which is really all that matters.

The WCHA is also fortunate that there are two schools that play excellent hockey that want to be in the league. Maybe not every scenario is ideal, but that doesn't mean that both parties don't benefit.

While making your 7 trips up here this year I'm wondering why you never introduced yourself to any of us?
We'll buy the beer on all of your 7 or more trips next time.
And let's not forget that us "lucky to be in your league" Alaskans help make the league what it is. At the time without us I believe the number of teams for "your" league would have been 7.
Grow a pair, man up and face reality and quit with the Alaska bashing.

Equally ridiculous is the lower 48 bashing. The big difference between the non-Alaska schools and the alaska schools is the non-alaska schools would still have 6+ to make a conference with an AQ in the eyes of the NCAA. That's why he can say UAA and UA_ are the lucky ones. I'm really sick and tired for fans of the alaska schools being upset over others mentioning the travel, or wanting a bye after going to alaska, etc. No one is crying, lacking a pair or failing to man up. There is a reason that UAA and UA_ were in different conferences for so long. The fact that the teams left, mostly in the eastern time zone are a little frustrated about the travel necessary to make a trip to Alaska every year and likely a 2nd trip for most is a real frustration, no matter how "normal" that might be for alaska teams. Its no different than how frustrated eastern teams get with a regional more than 2 hours from home. Something out of the norm is still out of the norm, no matter how unrealistic that norm might be when shifting the group looking at things.

We should all be happy that there were enough teams leftout of the transition that no one as yet has folded shop from being left out. Nothing says that won't happen in the future but with the closeness of this league, its like to help with attendance and interest when truly on any given night any team can win. As soon as UAH finds its recruiting and gets its feet planted, this league will get really interesting, especially if the bottom 2 continue to not make the conference tournament.

Just so I understand: Start whining and crying about reality is fine however defending reality is bashing.
Now I get it.
Thank you for enlightening me.

In the recent discussion, when has anyone cried or whined about anything?

No one appears to be bashing but you. And with that charming attitude, why would anyone introduce themselves? I did get the opportunity, albeit limited on both trips to meet a few fans. Generally, pretty nice people there. And I did appreciate suggestions they gave on places to have a meal or enjoy a beverage. Now, do you think the Alaska schools would make all those trips to Michigan and Minnesota if they didn't have to? I did notice your basketball team plays a lot of schools in Washington and Idaho. Why not join the GLIAC or Northern Sun? Then you could be in with many of your hockey rivals. Oh wait, now I realize why you don't make those trips for basketball. You don't have to. Personally, I'm looking forward to the third trip through airport security next weekend. But then again, take off to landing in Huntsville is less than 6 hours.

Scanning the tie breaker rule that we will soon all be closely acquainted with: " If two or more teams are still tied (or all teams tied have not played four contests against one another) the highest seed will go to the team with the greater number of conference wins."

So a win and a loss is more valuable than two ties? That seems counterintuitive. By this logic an undefeated team could lose its tiebreaker to a .500 team.

The team with fewer wins also has fewer losses in your scenario. Hmmmmm...

Go back through your e-mails. Look at the ones from me giving you tips, ideas whatever on some places and things to do while here. And also some to avoid. But perhaps your memory may not be what it used to be.
Speaking of which if my memory serves me correctly it was the CCHA that folded. Not the WCHA. I believe it was your CCHA teams making application to join the WCHA of which UAA was already a member. And if I remember correctly all the travel etc. was known and agreed to before any CCHA schools were accepted into the WCHA.
Reality guy, reality.
Deal with it.

Im almost positive the next 2 tiebreakers will come into play as well...One thing I'm not sure about is once 2 or more teams are still tied, do we go back to H2H if everyone has played 4 times, or most wins?

Then I guess I owe you a beer. Actually the WCHA was set to be UAA, Bemidji, Mankato, St Cloud, Tech and NMU. One Alaska school. Then St Cloud bolted at the last second. They may be flying the WCHA banner and Bruce might still be running the show, but I see five teams from the CCHA and an independent as opposed to four surviving WCHA teams.

Precisely. I personally would prefer my team to tie twice in a weekend rather than win and lose. I just dread adding any numbers in that second column and never complain about leaving any hockey game with at least one point.

Yeah, I was also wondering what happens if Team A, B and C are tied. Team A defeated Team B 3 out of 4, Team B defeated Team C 3 out of 4 and Team C defeated Team A 3 out of 4. So they all win a tie breaker and lose a tie breaker.

It's going to get complicated, I just hope the Bulldogs stave off the Mavericks and so I can comfortably watch everyone else freak out.

Maybe the WCHA should of allowed just 3 teams from the CCHA join and let the other 2 lay in the ditch.

Since head to head fails to break the tie, they go to the next tie breaker. Once one team is separated from the other two, that means the tie is broken. They start over from the top to break the next tie.

In your example, if Team A had 14 league wins and Team B and C had 13, Team A gets the higher seed. Team B and C are still tied, and from your exampe, Team B wins that tie breaker based on head to head. The teams would be seeded A, B, C.

By your example though, if we get to wins and Team A has 14, B 13, C 12...is it automatically A,B,C in the order based on that tiebreaker? Does it matter more if 4 teams are tied?

Lets say every series the rest of the season is a split (one win, one loss) except MSU sweep MTU, BGSU and NMU tie twice and UAH doesn't win another game. That would result in a 6-way tie for 3rd. Before breaking the tie we'd know:
1) FSU, 2) MSU, 9) NMU, 10) UAH

The we'd have:
LSSU 14-14-0
UA_ 13-13-2
MTU 12-12-4
UAA 12-12-4
BSU 12-12-4
BGSU 11-11-6

Tiebreaker 1, not everyone has played everyone else 4 times, so we go to most wins, that puts LSSU 3rd, but does it also place UA_ 4th and BGSU 8th?

Or the CCHA teams could have left the WCHA 4 by the side of the road, added Huntsville had 6 and left Tech, Mankato, Bemidji and Anchorage. Both groups needed each other at this point. I doubt the current configuration will last more than another year or two.

I can see it now.................. The new "Fear of Flying League" will start up with Greyhound Bus Line as the chief sponsor.
