The New WCHA (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Does anyone know for sure if the NCHC and the Big10 will have autobids right away? I know there was a rule that new conferences had to wait a couple of years before garnering the autobid, but:

a) don't know if that is still the case
b) thought there might be a clause that if all your teams are D-I schools, you get around that. The Big10 would benefit from that, but not the NCHC (UMD, SCSU, CC).

I don't remember the rules, but I believe that they both get autobids right away.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

I think the NCHC will be able to have an autobid right away since St. Cloud was added to the mix. 6 teams playing together for 2+ years or something like that.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Anyone who is hoping the new WCHA will rotate with the Big Ten at Joe Louis and the XCel for their first conference tourneys better look again. If Michigan couldn't put 8000 in the Joe for a semi final this weekend, what do you think and NMU-Bemidji matchup would draw, or Alaska-Mankato? Although things might be a little better at the X, I can't see Bowling Green and Lake Superior putting many butts in the seats.

The nWCHA at the Joe would be a huge mistake in my opinion unless the Joe offered guaranteed money

Even during the regular season this is something (attendance) that I'm worried about with the new WCHA in general. Are these teams going to be able to draw when they no longer have Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Denver, CC, Michigan, Michigan State, Miami, Notre Dame, etc. coming to their venues at least once a year? Is this something to be concerned about?

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Tech gets a bigger boost from Northern than any other opponent. Minnesota and Wisconsin would be next, then Duluth and NoDak. We get no bump from playing DU or CC, unless it's Winter Carnival. I recall a few years ago, CC was ranked #1 and visited Houghton, Tech took three points and the MacInnes was about half full both nights. Almost no difference Saturday, even after Friday's 2-2 tie.

Can't speak for other schools though.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

It's really two different issues. one is how will the teams draw in the regular season and second how will they draw in a playoff scenario.Didn't BGSU play in minnesota this last season? and how was the attendance for that? As far as playoffs, kind of a crap shoot if you ask me. I'd be against the joe however.

OK, so is NMU going to be the only draw that Tech has in the new WCHA? Bemidji @ Tech? Mankato @ Tech? AA @ Tech? BGSU @ Tech? Ferris @ Tech? AF @ Tech? LSSU @ Tech (this may become a draw)? Reverse all those, mix them up, and I just don't see many people in the stands. The nine teams in the new WCHA are going to have to actively and forcefully find NCHC and BTHC teams that will continue to come to the new WCHA venues. Is that going to be possible? Are the new WCHA teams going to be able to get commitments from the NCHC and BTHC to schedule games with one another, home and home, and not just at their venues?

So far concensus says no to getting equal commitments by the B1G and NCHC schools. I guess we'll see once the dust settles, but that's going to take five years for the honeymoon to end.

DavyD: I think we pretty much settled that debate in the first few pages. Resch Center is the leading location (by the fans). Van Andel is second.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

From what I've seen in the last few years, winning has a bigger impact on your attendance compared to who you play. I think our regular season attendance low this year (Alabama Huntsville game #2) was higher than either game vs. Michigan or Michigan State in 2009-10.

I expect we'll still be playing Ferris State annually home and home, and I wouldn't be shocked if we're doing something regularly with NMU/LSSU/BG if they want to. It's not like we're Wisconsin and we'll lose $500,000 per game we don't play at home. We're also not exactly what you call a "huge draw", though. :o

UMD will do that for sure.

I'd like to see NMU continue on with WMU. The rivalry of the four years (was it) of playing you guys in the playoffs; it's been fun and I'd like to see it extended.

Ideally, I would like NMU to have long term deals with WMU, tOSU, SCSU, tUMD, Wisconsin, and UNO. I know that secures our non-Conf games for a few years, but those are all schools that have worked with NMU.

I think SCSU, tUMD, WMU, tOSU and UNO will all make return trips to MQT.

The Wisconsin series is a good boost for NMU if they sell out the Resch Center.

I honestly never expect to see MSU or Michigan ever again in the BEC. And I'm okay with that.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Oh, and yes, I am aware I contradict myself by saying that the B1G schools and NCHC schools won't make return trips, then state B1G and NCHC schools I feel would make return trips.

I think it's going to come down to the regions.

WMU with FSU and ND (and I hope the UP schools)
tUMD with MTU, potentially NMU, LSSU
SCSU with Bemidji, Mankato

I don't know who CC and DU will get, I'm interested in seeing how their schedules are set since it's a flight to/from them.

UNO, is an island that will likely schedule with WCHA schools.

And UAH, I could see the WCHA taking in...

... But, there is still some shuffling in the East to take care in my opinion. I don't want to see the CCHA fold. I think a minor change in Hockey East, ECAC, and the AHA is still possible. But, I don't know if some AHA schools want to spend more on scholarships.

I wish they would.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Something to watch for with the Resch Center in Green Bay is the Wisconsin state high school basketball tournaments. The WIAA and Madison are about to get divorced because UW won't guarantee the Kohl Center in 2013 because of the WCHA playoffs and potentially 2014 because of the women's Frozen Four. The boys tournament would most likely fall on conference tournament weekend in college hockey.

The Resch Center has put in a lucrative offer the WIAA has voted to accept if UW can't guarantee the Kohl Center. That could rule out the Resch.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

€¥%#$& !! Well there goes the central location plan.

So we're down to Van Andel. And potentially Milwaukee and Chicago.

Let's just book ice time at George Gipp Arena and call it done. :D
