Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Since Donald wanted it to be.
If the WCHA (and/or AHA) reduce their conference schedule, it's going to open up the NCHC and B1G teams to want 2-for-1 deals to fill the WCHA teams non-conference schedule. Which reduces the amount of home games your fans are at games.

That's a bad thing? Oh, yeah, it is. 2-of-22.

Big Rapids, Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette and Houghton, what is your airport situation like?

I flew into MQT a decade ago when we played Northern.* The runway can handle it, but the ground transportation infrastructure really isn't there for fans to come in.**

* The guys at the rental counter were amused to see a reservation for Alabama, so they checked the weather report and saw that it was colder in Huntsville [3F] that morning than it was in Marquette [11F]. It got warmer every stop on my way north via Memphis and Detroit. Stupid pipe froze while I was gone, too, but that's because it was in the garage. Our water bill that month sucked.

** As I remember it, there were two options, and neither seemed to rent more than a dozen vehicles. The demand just isn't there for it. Now maybe they can ferry rental cars up from Detroit given some demand—not sure how the companies handle peak in their systems, but that's how I'd do it—but I did well to get a 4WD. Unfortunately, being the only member of the radio crew over 23 (I was 24), I was driving it, which meant that I was the mostly-sober DD. But that came in handy when ... better not tell that story.

1. 4WD just gets you stuck further in the snow in the winter. ;)
2. You're funny if you think they can just shuttle up a bunch of cars from Detroit. Marquette is closer (via car) to Minneapolis, Chicago, and Dubuque than it is Detroit. And Fargo is just 30 miles further than Detroit.

They're not going to "ferry rental cars up from Detroit" just for fans to make the trip on a random weekend in January (or any other time of the year).

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

1. All the cities in the WCHA have sufficient runways.

2. I've never had a problem getting a rental car but unless you go on united mid morning from chicago,, and if you are going to go up on friday, there are no flights that will get you there in time for the game unless you fly to mqt, and that flight gets you there around 4 pm. not to mention the road conditions in the winter and all the deer you have to not hit. I generally fly to Iron Mountain and drive the 2 hours up from there, rather than buy another hotel room, or drive for 11 hours.

3. If the league wanted to arrange it, they could charter planes for regular league games at marginally more than the bus and a savings of at least a day per weekend of the players time. This would come in especially well to teams like FSU, BGSU and Huntsville. Chartering to alaska is cost prohibitive btw.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Here's the current records through this weekend of nWCHA schools versus BHHC and Big10 schools. I just eyeballed and tickmarked this so it's certainly possible to have an error or two. But I think it's mostly correct.

nWCHA versus Everyone who thought they were too good to be in their existing league = 11-25-5
nWCHA versus Big10 = 7-9-3
nWCHA versus BHHC = 4-16-2

For Whatever It's Worth.

On the 4WD — really? Thankfully I know how to drive on snow a little. Don't let Mike Anderson tell you how we went into the ditch in his car on the way to Wayne State that year without asking how bald his tires were (very).

As for the ferrying, I was thinking for only something big where we were discussing medium-sized, charter planes being used, although now I see that we're talking about league-subsidized travel between all member schools. [Sorry, I blacked out because it's shorts weather outside right now.] Otherwise, I'm sure it's the puddle-jumpers from DTW and MSP that would be standard fare.

GFM <-- was on the flight back with the jerk-off ref that called a BS kneeing major on us in a game where we were in it. Not that I'm still bitter a decade later.

I know people who find a -20 before windchill day to be shorts weather.

Jesus! And I've been told that I hold a grudge!

At Tech, they're referred to as CS majors. Also, try driving on Bridge or Agate without 4x4 in the winter. It's not just needed to get you farther into the ditch ;)

Drove my Focus up Agate in 6" of snow, while a Jeep slipped and spun. It's all about how you drive it.

I have the ability to drive down Agate in any type of vehicle... just don't get in my way or expect me to stop at US-41.

Is that good, bad, indifferent? Does it affect the hockey program much?

Just some random thoughts that I put together during my lunch break.

It will be interesting to say the least. Not sure what this will mean for the hockey program, but a lot will depend on the hire (hockey person versus non-hockey person).

Football and Mens Basketball have each won conference titles under his watch, with basketball making a couple of NCAA Regionals. Both of those haven't happen since the 1960s, IIRC. Hockey has made the move to the WCHA and played multiple NCAA Tournament games, including the 09 Frozen Four. Womens basketball looks poised to make some noise this year.

Rick, as AD, has been sitting on committees to help with the transition from the old WCHA to the new WCHA. He is also a member of the NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament Committee.

But, like the article said, BSU is falling behind in the NSIC Arms Race, right now to the tune of 18 scholarships, average. When the NCC teams came over to the NSIC, that changed the dynamics of the league from a funding standpoint. Some schools have kept up, others have not and BSU is in danger of becoming a have not. Those 18 scholarships at say $10,000 (just a guess) is $180,000 more that needs to be raised.

Facilities wise, the gym has a new floor thanks to the Lueken Family and their donation. The locker rooms have undergone upgrades and the John Glas Fieldhouse has become somewhat of an indoor practice facility with hopes of laying some turf in there. There is a decent soccer field on campus, but the Chet could definitely use some work, which is probably going to take some major cash. The Sanford Center is a very nice hockey facility, but that was done through the City of Bemidji and not the University.

I guess right now, it is all about the money, and it is going to become even more so with the changing WCHA on the mens hockey side.

I hope this all turns out well and does not set BSU back....

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Definately caught me off guard, but If I am looking at this with an optimistic mindset, I guess it is good that BSU is being proactive and getting on top of this before they become entrenched in a "havenot" position. I am curious how this affects the nWCHA and his role on the committee but I would imagine his replacement will fill the spot? I have to imagine that anyone who replaces him will have to be a "hockey" person seeing as that is their top program on campus.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Maybe he'll be the new commish after the bum McLeod is done away with. I didn't get the impression that he was a bad AD, and I did get the impression that he has been highly involved in the nWCHA, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was more a transition to a new type of role in the future.

I really hope that's true. The people working at the league offices are old fossils that can't even get up in the morning, and are asking what is this new thing you call the internet? We need some young guys in there with some energy.

I wonder if after the split the women's WCHA will move under the same roof as the mens.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Got the idea from Deadspin. Here's how the college hockey realignments look. The spot is the midpoint of all the member schools. The ring is the average distance from each school to the midpoint location.

As the WCHA and CCHA are currently:
1213AvgDistance.jpg

And how the NCHC, WCHA, and B1G will look come next October:
1314AvgDistance.jpg

Adding Huntsville to the WCHA for 13-14 moves the midpoint just slightly southeast (still located within Canada) and the ring shrinks by just 30 miles (virtually no change to the graph).

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Have any of the ADs in the nWCHA talked about the whole TV situation and how TV expsoure will drop within this league?

I'm really curious on if they've just resigned themselves to the fact that each team will just have their own internet feed or are they trying to find ways to get exposure on TV, Roku channel etc. With UND not being able to broadcast homegames on Fox College Sports next year, you wonder if FCS would be open to showing some nWCHA games.
