The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

This post amounts to you yelling down at us, from your yacht "It's going to be OK, guys!" While 4 of us are trying to bail out our 14 foot Lund, and the other 3 are trying to start the '76 Evinrude in the back. The Alaska schools are *****ing because we bought 87 octane instead of 95.

All I would say is that...the league may end up with issues...but AK is not the source of the majority of them. Therefore, IMO so much consternation on AK is misplaced.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

You know all of MTU welcomes UAH, however you would play in the Southeast Division and would face off against the Thrashers Alumni team in the WCHA opening round.

In summary:
North Division - UAA and UAF
UP Division - MTU, NMU and LSSU
Mitten Division - FSU and BGSU
Mud Duck Division - BSU and MSU
Southeast Division - UAH and Miami of Florida (I heard they're going D-I in hockey soon... I mean who isn't being rumored to go D-I in the near future)

Ryan J

The WCHA could run the tournament with all preset matchups. We could have the following matchups and all could be bus trips. Home ice would be determined by regular season standing.

UAA and UAF
BSU and MSU-M
MTU and NMU
LSSU and FSU
BGSU and UAH

The five winners meet in the Final Five, seedings based on final standings.

Honestly, I don't mind this as much as I thought I would. First, this would reinforce and create rivalries if you're meeting the same team, the (usually) closest team geographically closest to you. Second, it would save a bunch of money for travel for the league. And third it would give the league a little bit of stability for the first few years while everyone feels it out. Once a few years go by, hopefully it can be decided that the standard 1 vs. 10, 2 vs. 9, setup would be feasible.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Stolen from a post over in the "Maturi Hoped Penn State Would Join the CCHA thread".

http://mankatofreepresshockey.blogspot.com/2012/06/maturi-hoped-penn-state-would-join-ccha.html

Maturi, 67, who has worked at other schools with Division I hockey, including Wisconsin, Miami and Denver, said he understood why WCHA representatives approved the so-called "Alaska Plan" that will pit Anchorage and Fairbanks against each other during the first round of the WCHA tournament. While he said he does not have intiment knowledge of the new WCHA's plans, he assumes that travel costs will be going up and revenues likely will be going down, which will be a challenge.

"I think it's what the conference had to do," he said. "You've got to be realistic also."

Maturi said the cost of having two teams flying to or from Alaska on five days notice is crippling.

"That's going to be as expensive as every dollar they take in on their tournament," he said. "It's crazy. It's just the reality of it. So what they did to me made some sense from a fiscal responsibility standpoint."

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

So the b.itching and moaning about coming to Alaska twice in a season has nothing to do with money and everything to do with YOUR fans, administrators, coaches and players being too p.ussy to sack up and get on a plane.

Feel free to send Sault Ste Marie's residents $1,000 a piece and we will be happy to come up there. Apparently you make $200,000/ year so you can afford random trips 2 or 3 times a year. This has EVERYTHING to do with money and not about us being p.ussies. You, sir, are an incompetent fool.

Actually that is pretty cool. Football is tinkering all the time with playoff formats...why not hockey? It could be marketed as a rivalry smackdown or some such.

It would guarantee a regionally diverse tournament (you don't end up with 5 teams, or no teams, from Michigan in the tournament for example). I like it. The problem would come in when two "rivals" are the two best teams in the league for 3 years running, and one always gets the boot.

That situation would just fuel the rivalry that much more. Its not ideal, but I wouldn't complain about this plan.

I love bigblue and all, but if we've hit on a plan that even he wouldn't complain about, we need to write the ADs and get it implemented ASAP. ;)

Exactly. This plan joins an exclusive list of things I won't complain about. The list also contains: Free Beer!, boobs, and flying the flag of the United States of America. ;)

It would maximize attendence in most cases, and therefore maximize profits that first year. Last year, Bemidji State was able to sell out their Saturday home game with Mankato. NMU and MTU, along with UAA and UAF would have quite a few butts in the stands as well. LSSU and FSU, I don't know enough about. BGSU and UAH may lack some as that would be the longest trip.

UAA-UAF: 359 miles
BSU-MSUM: 275 miles
NMU-MTU: 100 miles
LSSU-FSU: 233 miles
BGSU-UAH: 565 miles

You could end up with 9 vs 10 playing, and therefore having a "Cinderella" in the Final Five.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

The 1 seeding vs. 2 seeding in the first round is the primary challenge. What critics there are would grow very loud if it happened more than once. But you could probably find a work around...it would just take away from the simplicity of the thing.

In the end, I think its a cool solution.

How is that the same group that was raging about playoff integrity likes this? I'm confused. We're playing DI hockey. Either we crap or get off the pot if you ask me...

If you want to be a D1 program act like one. Wow what a brilliant idea.

If 1 is to play 2, give them both byes and send them to the Final Six - where they get byes again.
