The NCHC Year Two: Haters Please Form A Queue to the Right

Re: The NCHC Year Two: Haters Please Form A Queue to the Right

*waits for UNO fans to mention how Ortega was robbed*

I'm not bothered by Ortega being where he is, though I would have though 2nd team would be more appropriate. I do have a problem with Nick Schmaltz getting on to the All Rookie Team over Avery Peterson. To me, 5-20 isn't an overly impressive stat line. Even Russell's 10 goals for SCSU this season doesn't impress me as much since 7 of them came when they were up a guy. Other than that, the list is fine

Re: The NCHC Year Two: Haters Please Form A Queue to the Right

The funniest by far, would be if SCSU sweeps us and we still both get in and then either WMU or CC plays in and 7 NCHC teams go instead of 6. Followed by one of those 3 "bottom" teams winning the NCAA championship.
Awesome thought, but the road to that scenario is narrow for more than the obvious reasons. A WMU AQ would mean pushing the last at-large to possibly 13th or even 12th in the PWR. I'm not sure SCSU could get to 12th in the PWR with a record of 3-1. 13th may be a stretch too.

If, by some miracle, SCSU can sweep UNO on the road this weekend, Huskies will definitely become fans of Quinnipiac, Yale, and (suppressing gag) Minnesota. The WCHA, HEA, and NCHC probably don't have to worry about tourney upsets. ECAC and B1G definitely could have upsets.

Again, you're making the same mistake I referenced before. Don't feel bad, we've all made it, and have to be reminded of it.

I believe for purposes of all conference teams they only look at conference stats.

Russell was the 2nd leading freshman point scorer in the conference, tied for 12th overall. Schmaltz was third for freshman.

Peterson was in a 6 way tie for 52nd in scoring overall, with 6 goals and 5 assists in conference play.

When I looked at the stats, I had Peterson at 6-6-12 in conference (looking at details on his stats page here) vs. Schmaltz at 4-11-15. On the main stats page for him, it shows him at 6-5.

Either way, the guys who vote on this all have their own opinions like we do. They get to give an award based on it and I don't.

Coaches and captains are given stat sheets with just conference games on them, as it is a conference award.

According to Collegehockeystats.net, Peterson is 6-5-11. Schmaltz has as many assists in conference play as Peterson had points.

You're not impressed with Russell bc he scores on the power play? IALTO. A freshman came in and tied for the conference lead in power play goals; that's impressive. In fact, only 7 players managed HALF as many power play goals as Russell in conference play. Why do I have the feeling if Peterson had less goals but more on the power play you'd be talking about how clutch he was? And Schmaltz was a pretty easy choice too; in conference play he had 2 less goals than Peterson but twice as many assists.

Believe me, I'm as big of an Avery Peterson fan outside of the UNO fanbase as you're gonna find, and even I couldn't put him ahead of any of those 3. Honestly, I'd also put him behind zee German (Tiffels; same goals, 3 more assists in 2 less games) and Vessel, and he'd be right in the mix with Randolph and Kuhlman. So in other words if there was an Honorable Mention All-Rookie team, he might have likely been snubbed on that too.

I think your picks are going to be pretty close to spot on. I do think McIntyre has a good chance to edge out LaLeggia for POY, and as you noted, it won't be a big surprise if Moore picks up forward of the year.

I wouldn't be shocked if McIntyre wins it. I think Jonny finishes in 3rd in that vote.

It would be interesting to see what coaches voted for who. Blais isn't allowed to vote for his players so apparently the NCHC head coaches and one player from each teams didn't think that he was worthy of the first or second team.

Its like that Meatloaf song goes "Cuz 6 outta 8 ain't bad..." (And if I'd had the guts to pull the trigger on Moore deserving it over Jonny Hockey, woulda been 7. Stand by Blais as COTY though)

Anyone know why they don't announce finalists for Scholar-Athlete and Sportsmanship?

Re: The NCHC Year Two: Haters Please Form A Queue to the Right

And, it is official.

6 of the 8 NCHC teams are irrefutably making the NCAA tourney and 6 of the current top 9 teams in Pairwise are NCHC teams.

Or, put another way, one lone conference qualified 75% of it's entire league for a tournament with only 16 total spots and those participants will comprise 37.5% of the entire tourney field and currently are 6 of the top 9 seeds.

And, the league was an overall 53-25-4 playing out of conference this season.

Anybody wanna speculate on the odds of an NCHC team hoisting the NCAA National Championship Trophy on April 11th?

playoffstatus.com currently has the odds at 40% with them showing 28 teams that still having a mathematical shot at the NCAA title. When that number is pared down to the final 16, that percentage is going to go well north of 50%, I am sure.

How about an all NCHC Frozen Four? That would utterly rule.

The NCAA will do all it can not to have that happen (for bracketology). Ever since the all-WCHA F4 a few years back, it's been like that.

The current bracketology, in that thread, has 2 regionals with 2 NCHC teams and 2 more with 1. Unless they finagle a way to get more than 2 in a particular regional, this is at least a possibility, no matter what histrionics the NCHC might have about this happening. There are too many NCHC teams in for them to "engineer around this", methinks.

The NaCHo does win the numbers game, I agree. Just saying it'll be a tougher road with the NCAA thought process.

Some similar discourse is currently going on in the Bracketology thread to what we are discussing.

Re: The NCHC Year Two: Haters Please Form A Queue to the Right

I said it in the Bracketology thread, and I'll say it again here: The NCAA is not afraid of an all-(whatever conference) Frozen Four. Their supposed "fear" of the all-WCHA FF was way overblown. Do you think the NCAA will care if it is 3 NCHC teams and Michigan Tech or Mankato? that's not all from one conference, but that's 4 western teams. Should the NCAA seed to avoid that too?

The FF is in Boston this year. People are still going to go.

I have seen some brackets in the past that DO NOT support this. Ever since the all WCHA frozen four, the committee has not placed four teams from the same conference in different regionals and instead have put teams like North Dakota, Denver, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in the same regional MULTIPLE times (when they were in the WCHA)! Now, they are probably going to have to put NCHC teams in four different regionals because they might have four #2 seeds from the NCHC according to where the teams sit in the pairwise. I still don't think the committee wants to even think about an all NCHC frozen four.

The committee has done the same thing to Hockey East and ECAC teams (just last year they did it). They are doing it for attendance, not some imagined fear of an intra-conference FF. Again, if you think it matters to the NCAA that there aren't 4 NCHC teams in Boston, then wouldn't they also not want 3 NCHC team + Michigan Tech or Mankato?
