That couldn't be further from the truth for UND, teams actually charge more when UND travels to their arena. When UND travels to BSU, UMD and SCSU the games are usually played in front of sold out crowds. Don't kid yourself NMU and LSSU aren't equal draws to UND. I was told by a a connected Miami fan that one of the few series they sold out this season was against UND.

While UNO doesn't charge more for North Dakota games (or any other), they are in a league by themselves here as far as opponent hype (one reason is glaringly obvious). The only other teams that have rivaled that here have been Michigan & Ohio State (from UNO's CCHA days of playing both every year) and Minnesota and Denver (from UNO's 3 years in the WCHA).

You throw out the crowds drawn by the "Sell Out this team or that team" promotion UNO has held in the 3 prior seasons until this year, and every one of the 10 largest crowds UNO has ever put in the CenturyLink Center (nee Qwest Center) has involved those 5 schools

Actually, yes, given the fact that the huge increase in travel turned what used to be a money sport into a money drain. The more money you spend on travel, the less money you have to spend on the program itself.

Regardless of what league we're in we still play the likes of OSU every year and I wouldn't be surprised to see home and homes with Michigan, MSU, and Notre Dame in the future. Economically speaking, it makes sense, they're all within a couple of hours drive. Who gives a crap what league you're in if you're still playing hockey against those same schools? You elitists all had the same opinion of the CCHA back in the 80's, too, until we started winning NCCA championships. You seem to have the idea that it will never happen again. We believe otherwise.

The simple fact is that Denver and CC didn't sell any more tickets in Kalamazoo and Oxford than Ferris or Bowling Green. Look at the WMU schedule. The number of butts in the seats at Lawson for Northern Michigan and North Dakota were virtually equal. Did St Cloud or UMD draw better at Miami or Western than Lake Superior had in the past? Both Western and Miami saw declines in attendance this season, some of which can be traced to the loss of Michigan and Notre Dame. But adding the so called Super Conference foes did nothing to alleviate that loss. The travel increases were in excess of $150,000 for each school which never had to pay for a flight in the CCHA, but had to pony up for at least four and as many as six with the new configuration. Denver and North Dakota hockey are big deals in the home towns, and deservedly so. They have long histories and proud traditions. But that just doesn't resonate in Kalamazoo or Oxford. At least not to the degree that justifies the added expense.

I would hope programs are looking longer term than this...rivalries take time. Granted Miami and Western have an uphill battle getting D1 fans to recognize teams that are really unknown other than hockey to some point but to think that one year is what to expect going forward is silly.

No doubt about it. But do you have five or ten years to try to grow it? No changes will come this year, maybe not even next. And at least another season or two will give a little more data to look at.

The WCHA is looking mighty fine for WMU and Miami.

The bus trips to Soo, Marquette, and Houghton will make money for these programs.

Have they applied yet?

No I meant that (BGSU and Miami), (WMU, NMU, FSU, LSSU and MTU), and (Mankato, Bemdji, St Cloud, and UMD) should all stick together separately whatever league they chose.

Ask the UNO Mavericks about five years to grow. First the CCHA then a four years in the WCHA.and one year in the NCHC.

I don't see five to ten years. If it is not working now you go the league that best suits your team.

Look at Butler in college basketball. Three leagues in the last three seasons. You go to where your team is best fit.

I'd have traded Miami and WMU for NMU and Tech (with MSU being the other candidate). But last I checked I don't have a vote.
