The Muscular Dystrophy Association Suck

Re: The Muscular Dystrophy Association Suck

So the lying liars at MDA say Jerry Lewis "retired." Yeah, in the same way Nicolae Ceausescu "retired" as leader of Romania. Are they stupid? Or do they think we are?

Just two questions: Who the bleep is Nigel Lythgoe? And who the bleep cares?

Re: The Muscular Dystrophy Association Suck

What happened to the telethon? Back in the day didn't it run all Labor Day?

And they will misrepresent how much they collected in an attempt to show that Jerry did not make a big deifference. I suspect a lot of people over the years tuned in at times just to see what sort of outrageous thing he would say or do.

The MDA, in its infinite wisdom, decided to trim the telethon back to 6 hours from the 21.5 it used to run. This is (one of?) the reason(s) Jerry Lewis balked at hosting this year. He was very opposed to the new format, so the MDA pushed him out. The MDA figures they can get more bang for their buck by running the telethon for six hours in prime time than all night Sunday and into Labor Day. The local channel only raised $600K in the six hours they were on the air, and the three times I was watching during the local breaks the phones were absolutely silent...the volunteers were watching the hosts as they begged people to call.

The only positive was Nancy O'Dell looked awesome in that dress..

Re: The Muscular Dystrophy Association Suck

The MDA reports making $61.5M in 6 hours, up from $58.9 in 21.5 hours last year.

Horse. ****.

I checked in a couple of times and never saw a tote board. I have serious doubts about their totals, also. And sending that no talent grinning eel Nigel Lythgoe out there to say Lewis "retired" made my skin crawl. Yeah, Lewis "retired," the same way Mussolini did at that gas station in Milan. Was it time for Lewis to go? Of course. But that's not the issue. The issue is Lewis' half a century's worth of good works and their incomprehensible disloyalty and ingratitude.

Bravo!!

That's what they're reporting. I know the local station was dead as Dillinger when they did the live shot every hour. They must have had a boatload of corporate contributions, or they added in money donated in several smaller fundraisers to reach that number.

Re: The Muscular Dystrophy Association Suck

It would have been perfect for Lewis to come on stage, take a bow, say a few words and sing "Can't Smile Without You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone." That would have been a great way for him to go out. I like Nancy O'Dell, but seeing her and those three tarts try to tell us Lewis "retired" was just an empty feeling. It seems wrong to hate on the MDA considering how much good they do, but they really screwed the pooch on this one.

Re: The Muscular Dystrophy Association Suck

Thanks, doc. Lewis, for all of his many faults, has two stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. At last count, Nigel Lythgoe has zero, and a hundred years from now, it'll still be zero. And Lythgoe's faux compliments of Lewis flies in the face of all the reporting that the reason Lewis was fired was because he had offended Lythgoe with his comments on "reality TV." I mean, somebody was going to have to replace Lewis sooner or later. And whoever it was, was going to look bad by comparison. Think of poor Phil Bengston replacing Lombardi in Green Bay.

When Lewis started with MDA he was a huge international star, and nobody had ever heard of the charity. He put them on the map. They owe him everything. Is it possible he said or did something that made it impossible to use him this year? Sure. But that bloodless press release announcing he wouldn't be part of this year's show after all, tells me this was their decision. They should have gotten down on their hands and knees, begging him do at least to a taped segment wishing them well. After all, it's still supposed to be about "the kids," and not whether Nigel Lythgoe's knickers are in a twist.

Same as my area. The local businesses ponied up, but we all know people were mad that Jerry got the shaft.

You're exactly right. Let's just speculate that this whole deal was Lewis' fault. That he balked at appearing one last time because he was angry that they were "forcing him out," or shortening the program or whatever. Even so, they should have moved heaven and earth to find somebody or some way to turn him around. And reminding him that the kids still need help would have been the one thing that ultimately would have succeeded. As I say, just a taped piece would have sufficed. Instead we get the galactically insincere Nigel Lythgoe.

I'm not shooting the messenger here. I'm declaring shenanigans on MDA and their figures.

Remember what they've told us for years: the money brought in by the corporate sponsors has been collected in advance, and is not included on the "toteboard". The national totals are what we've collected today, to which the corporate money is added, for a much larger overall total than what they sign off with. But, if they changed the rules, and counted the corporate money as part of the "telethon" money, maybe they could get there. If that's what they did, it's horribly deceptive. Because when Lewis signed off with 59 million, the total was actually far greater.

I understood :) They aren't dumb enough to just make up a number, so it came from somewhere.

Re: The Muscular Dystrophy Association Suck

Over the years, with Jerry there, I still felt the numbers were a bit faked-I mean how was it possible that each year they just surpassed the previous year? But this year is ridiculous-the economy is in the crapper, high unemployment, 46 million are on food stamps-and the donations go up so far that they collect more in 6 hours than last year with 19 hours? Have to wonder how charitible contributions are doing for all the others this year? I don't know the numbers but i would imagine that charitible giving is down across the board.
