I didn't mind the prequels for Star Wars overall. Hard to recapture that magic of the first three, especially considering how old one was when first watched.

I didn't mind the new Star Treks at all. They were better than some of the originals, worse than others.

Expendables 3:

Loved it in all its popcorn glory. Great balance of poking fun at themselves and a decent action movie. Minor spoiler: good passing of the guard, too, although I think they could have found some better choices. I like Ronda Rousey, but when she's the biggest "new guard".....kind of a problem. I really hope that the rumor (dunno how valid the rumor is) about having an all-female sequel is true. I know some friends and I were kicking around names we'd like to see in that.

My friends saw Horrible Bosses 2 and loved it immensely...I plan to see it this week :)

I think that is too harsh. Kirk's daddy's liebestod was such infantile corn it belonged in The Dark Knight, but other than that the first Abrams Trek flick was satisfactory. The second was hot garbage.

I can only speak of Ep 1 since I ignored the other two. Ep 1 was a tween merchandising scam. What if Steven Spielberg directed a Kenner Toy Saturday morning cartoon?

What people don't seem to remember is how poor Ep 6 was, though. That series ran the classic 95/80/65/50... sequence. From what I've heard, 35 and 20 are too kind for Eps 2 and 3. We're due for a 5 from Ep 7, but if they recapture the dated Space Opera feel of the original I have hopes that it will be adequate.

We saw Sin City a Dame to Kill for over the holiday. Just awful.

Four people watching, collective review is eight thumbs down.

Episode 1 of the Star Wars series should be ignored completely. While Episodes 2 and 3 aren't great, they are quite acceptable and do an acceptable job of telling the prequel story. Granted some of the acting is still too wooden, but I blame Lucas for almost everything wrong with them.

Lucas sold out. That's been the problem since Episode VI on. We'll see if Abrams has a different idea or not.

It really started with little things that became big things. The original script for Return of the Jedi had Han dieing during the fight with Jaba, but Lucas changed that so as to sell more toys. He admitted to it, and production staff lament the changes that he made in the concern for merchandising because they were made at the expense of the movie's quality. He did the same with te prequels

A New Hope was great because Lucas had to do a lot with only a small budget and didn't have any clue he was sitting on a mountain of gold, so the focus was entirely upon the quality of the movie. The Empire Strikes back was phenomenal because Lucas had penned the basic story but then let Kasdan and Brackett write the screenplay and Kershner directed it; they wanted to tell a good story and knew how to make top flight quality of the material.

Now you have Abrams directing a movie that has Lucas pretty far removed from it. He has a rich universe in which to operate and appears to be more interested in the quality of the movie than merchandising concerns. This movie has great potential written all over it.

And say what you will about Disney, but they know how to turn out a product that people mostly want to see. By mostly, I mean not perfect but a hell of a lot better than people expected, and for Star Wars that would be a drastic improvement over the prequels. Everyone feared they would ruin the Marvel movies, but they did well beyond expectations, and in the end they know how to make money and have hired the right people and gotten out of the way at the right times, so fingers crossed that continues here.


Though I suppose it's too much to hope we go back to stop motion and miniatures for special effects. As good as technology has gotten, real things still look more real, and CGI still looks like actors acting against a green screen.

Disney is the Proctor & Gamble of entertainment: high quality, mainstream target, no risks, nothing original, no excuses. After the prequels that will be a big step up. Lucas being all but eliminated from the creative process is also a good sign. I think we'll get something very serviceable. Frankly, if someone was interested in doing something original they would stay away from prestige franchises and... do something original.

I dunno what those numbers mean, but Jedi was the worst of all 6 released. Yeah, I said it.


Empire was obviously the best but Revenge of the Sith was pretty darn solid.

Nah... Phantom was way, WAY worse.

I agree on Revenge of the Sith though. Thought the destruction of the Jedi was well done and quite heavy to watch.


I really liked the first animated Clone Wars series. I believe they were shorts shown on Cartoon Network.

The Clone Wars was the most interesting part of the prequels and they glossed over them almost completely. I understand why, but would have liked to see Anakin and Kenobi (and Mace etc) kick butt - of course with different actors or a better director.

Oh well.

Phantom was the 2nd worst. Big gap between 4th-5th, though.

Yes, the Jedi massacre (Order 66) was awesome.

Disney has a new animated series called Star Wars Rebels. It takes place post Order 66 but pre A New Hope. I like it and it does give me a sliver of hope for VII.

I've been watching it, too. It has potential, but needs to get out of the character introduction phase in a hurry.

Order 66 was fine, but Anakin killing kids was stupid. Anakin should have flipped in Attack of the Clones and Obiwon should have spent Sith trying to turn him back as he hunts down Jedi and kills them. Revenge of the Sith was a very good movie that was dragged down by the crap that came before it and set it back.

I once read an argument that the best order in which to watch the series, was to pour gas on Ep 1 and burn it, then watch 4, 5, 2, 3, and 6.

Of course, you have to liberally exercise Kepler's rule of fast-forwarding through all the execrable, wooden, "forbidden couple" scenes between Padme and Anakin in the prequel movies (or, alternately, run the Rifftrax in the background while watching them). Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about Lucas' obsession with unnecessary CGI density.

In our household we refuse to watch the ending of Revenge of the Sith. It is absurd that Obi-wan would merely lecture Anakin and then leave him. To be true to the character, either Obi-wan kills Anakin as he lays there, or (our alternate version) we have some kind of volcanic explosion or something that separates Obi-wan and Anakin so that Obi-wan cannot kill him. We literally turn off the movie at that point.

I guess I am in a minority in that I really don't like Attack of the Clowns very much. Except for the scene with Obi-wan on Pamino learning about the clone factory, the entire movie was a waste.

I guess I am in a minority in that I liked Phantom Menace (except for Jar-Jar Binks, of course. Those scenes I'd delete if I could).




I know that one is not supposed to exercise logic when it comes to these kind of movies, but I am puzzled by something. In one of the movies we are told that there are only two Sith lords, the master and the apprentice. Palpatine and Vader / Anakin were both killed on the Death Star at the end of Return of the Jedi. So where does the Sith in episode 7 come from??
