The Manhattanville Valiants 2012-2013 Season Thread

Pumped up for the Valiants' season to finally get underway this weekend at Hobart. I heard a lot of good things about this team this year. Just looked at their schedule. 14 road games and only 10 home games on the schedule this year including having to go to Hobart and Elmira twice each for the second consecutive year. Go Valiants!

Their rink got hit by Sandy. Four feet of water (salt water??) in the basement where the compressors are. Women moved to the road this weekend.

Re: The Manhattanville Valiants 2012-2013 Season Thread

Playland rink essentially sits on a man-made jetty/pier on Long Island Sound...if there is 4 feet of salt water in the pump room, it would be heroic if they can put it back together by the first of the year...

Re: The Manhattanville Valiants 2012-2013 Season Thread

From the Daily Voice:
'O’Connor said flooding in the basement damaged Playland’s Ice Casino. During high tide overnight, sand, saltwater and fish were rushed in by storm surge and left floating in the building’s basement. “The salt water, there could be damage to the motors and to the equipment, so we’re inspecting all of that. There’s damage within the ice rink, damage on the roof … it’s pretty extensive here,” said Astorino. Sustainable Playland Inc., the company tentatively hired to reinvent the historic park, has not yet been informed of the level of damage at the park. “As bad as it is here, it’s still standing and the rides as far as we know were not damaged,” he said, adding that the county is still responsible for all damages. “She came in with a fury. For whatever reason, Sandy didn’t like Playland,” said Astorino.'

Off-topic a bit, but what do you guys think about the censure from the NCAA? Is it warranted?

Re: The Manhattanville Valiants 2012-2013 Season Thread

I have been trying to find out, but nothing posted that I can find - I think its clear from news reports that the rink was hard hit - the group that was taking the whole park over from the County seems to have some issues (tax problems for founder)....I would be surprised if anyone in charge views the rink restoration as a priority....also - the Go Valiants website has been up and down recently - I figured that was storm related...

From Govaliants.com:

"RYE, N.Y. – With the Playland Ice Casino facility still unplayable due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy last weekend, the site and time of the next three Manhattanville men's hockey games against Nazareth and Morrisville State have been changed.

The Valiants' 2012-13 home-opening weekend, scheduled for Friday and Saturday night against Nazareth, will now be played at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford, Conn., which is approximately 16 miles away from campus east on Interstate 95. Friday's game will be moved back one hour and now will begin at 8 p.m., while Saturday's game will still have the puck drop at 7 p.m.

In addition, next Saturday's scheduled game against Morrisville State has also been moved to Terry Conners Rink, with the game time now pushed back to 7 p.m.

Manhattanville thanks the Stamford Youth Hockey Association for their gracious donation of ice time allowing the Valiants to play their games at Terry Connors, and as a result would like to invite all Stamford youth hockey players to attend the game free of charge. Tickets for adults are $7 per person, while all Manhattanville students are free with a valid student ID.

Due to the change of location, the GoValiants.TV video broadcasts have been cancelled for all three games. However, we are working to have the games heard live on WMVL 88.1 FM, with the broadcasts beginning 15 minutes before the opening faceoff. Also, live stats for every home game (in Stamford or Rye) will still be available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/manhattanville/mhockey/.

Manhattanville enters the weekend at 0-1-1 overall and in ECAC West Conference play after opening the season with two games at #9/7 Hobart in Geneva last weekend. Nazareth is 2-3-0 (0-1-0 ECAC West) in their first season of varsity competition and dropped their first conference contest to #13 Utica on Saturday."

Playland is an absolute mess (the entire park, not just the rink) and the county is in no rush to clean up any of it. The team will definitely not be able to get back into Playland for the rest of the semester, and maybe even the entire year. Luckily(?) they have only one home game between Nov. 24 and Feb. 1, so that might help some.

The men might only have one...but the women have seven in that span.

There is a video of the post Sandy Playland here.

And a article here gives some more detail.

According to GoValiants.com, starting with this year's ECAC West Playoff bracket (with Nazareth added) all six teams will make the playoffs. The 6th seed will take on the 3rd seed and the 5th seed will take on the 4th seed. Those games will be played on the first Wednesday after the regular season. The top two teams in the ECAC West receive a bye into the semi-finals. From that point on, the lowest seed takes on the highest seed. It's like the NFC/AFC Playoffs in the NFL.

I love this idea! This should be an interesting year.

It is exactly what they do in the SUNYAC

Re: The Manhattanville Valiants 2012-2013 Season Thread

I'm not a fan of conference tournaments that negate the much-more-significant regular season... Having said that, I like this format, too.

Since the W is traditionally very tight and doesn't get an AQ, the additional game-results will ( I hope ) help sort things out vis-a-vis getting the W's best team(s) in The Dance.

Re: The Manhattanville Valiants 2012-2013 Season Thread

A tough situation for this team having to play its home schedule "on the road". Terry Conners is a nice facility..a nice HIGH SCHOOL facility that is further off campus and requires taking Rte 95 North during RUSH hour (unless you are a local and don't mind an hour or more over back roads). It will be interesting to see how the team responds, what the scoring stats look like, etc. They might need a more permanent solution given the disfunction of the County and those responsible for Playland... Good Luck Valiants!

Re: The Manhattanville Valiants 2012-2013 Season Thread

According to the Rye Playland Web-site, the Playland Ice Casino will be closed for the remainder of the year.....
