Good Luck and farewell to Rick Mick, Lakers trainer & equipment manager as he heads West to the wilds of Montana........

Happy Trails!

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

ND arena construction begins......Looks like a GREAT two sheet arena.
Nice to have a 15 million dollar donor to get things moving at ND!

We will be finalizing our architect / contractor selection by the end of next week...on schedule progress here as well!

I think that our players area (locker room/ training area/ strength & conditioning areas) be every bit as solid as ND and that is where the $$ are needed at LSSU. we have plenty of seats and lofts for the SSM market, no need for an expansive "club" facility for the number of presidents club level Laker Club members......"right sizing" bricks & mortar, while investing in things that will show up on the ice is the key to our project.

Yeah, Notre Dame's new arena is looking like it will be a gem. I'll have to make a trip to see the Lakers play the Irish in their new barn in the future.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

So, is anyone getting worried about the news that Penn State is adding college hockey? The much speculated about Big Ten hockey conference seems to be closer and closer with PSU joining the D-I ranks.

If Big Ten hockey does happen, could a smaller CCHA survive? Would the Lakers still be fine?

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

The Big Ten hockey league is currently off the radar.

I believe it was on USCHO this summer as Minnesota has ZERO interest in leaving WCHA. TV $$$$ is obviously the draw but I believe the Big Ten Network will feature CCHA & WCHA game involving big ten match ups as an alternative.

Wisconsin had an interest but it was Minnesota who was the most vocal opponent of such a move.

IF (and I see it as a big if) a big ten conference became a reality I see cross conference games with the CCHA continuing as 6-7 team leagues need to fill out their schedule. The Joe....would opt for Big Ten playoff, but a two round CCHA playoff could lead to a single NCAA berth. In any scenario I see CCHA playing big ten teams for a long while, either as conference foes on non conference games.

I guess the time frame is the question;
Penn State studying the feasibility of an arena = maybe 3-5 years away from reality, I just don't see a D-1 program sooner than 5 years.

IU moving fron D-2 to D-1 club status (independent) non league....a long way from NCAA D-1.

So if we are talking 8-10 years out anything is possible, but in the next 5 years I believe status quo holds.
IMHO

Some posters on here think that a Big Ten Conference could spell the end for LSSU hockey and other small schools like Ferris.

I don't. The CCHA currently has 11 teams, 3 of which are Big 10 schools. Even if a Big 10 conference eventually formed, and even if Notre Dame went along with it, that leaves 7 CCHA schools. That's plenty enough for a conference, and there's easily the possibility of picking up an eighth team (e.g. UAH or Mercyhurst).

A Big 10 conference would have maybe 7 or 8 teams also, and that's if both Penn State and Indiana started programs. There would still be opportunities for inter-league play to fill out schedules. There's been talk of a Big 10 conference for years. It costs a lot of money to start up a hockey program and there are Title IX issues for a school to consider also. Until at least a couple of more Big 10 schools actually start a Div 1 program, I think it will continue to be just talk.

talk.

But the WCHA could try and get CCHA schools to replace Wisconsin and Minnesota. For example, if they got NMU and Miami from the CCHA, that would leave just five CCHA schools: LSSU, Alaska, Ferris, Western Michigan and Bowling Green.

Would Laker hockey survive if that scenario happened? It might, but let's hope a Big Ten Conference NEVER happens.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

In talking to a few people that attend NCAA meetings and the like, I get the sense there is zero concern over the possibility of a Big Ten hockey conference. The powers-that-be in the NCAA have no interest in the idea. Whenever it is brought up it is shelved immediately due to massive disinterest. TV, for the most part, has no interest.

What you will see is more games between Big Ten schools. There will probably be some type of reworking of the schedule in all Div One conferences to accommodate such a scenario.

But as far as a Big Ten conference, it ain't happenin'.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Off the radar? Penn State is adding Division I hockey and a prominent hockey writer said Indiana is interested in adding a team. I'm worried about it.

Naaaaaaa.. don't worry about it. Anastos thinks he'll get Penn St. to join the CCHA as the 12th team.
There was a write up a month or so back that he/the CCHA has been in contact with them about the possibility of them joining the conference when they make the jump to D1. Now if they do or don't join the CCHA remains to be seen...

side note: Laker Hockey Season ticket renewals are due by end of the month before they go on sale to the general public. Get yours now before they're gone!!! :D

I was just up to the Soo and went out to Sherman Park to beat the heat and the water there was shallow as always but comfortable. Rotary Park in the evening was nice with the breeze.
