The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

If we're being technical, none of these movies deserve to be on a top 25 of all time list other than for $$$. 12 Angry Men might make the top 100 best movies. The Godfather and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly make the top 100 for most fun.

I love how you say that when 3 of the 4 you haven't seen almost certainly deserve to be there...

I'm only responsible for what I've seen. But it is an oddity that I haven't seen Cuckoo's Nest. I have an irrational fear of it. I'd like to see City of God sometime, too. The other two hold zero interest: mawkish hooey.

Holy shiat. Not seeing Shawshank is immediate grounds for revoking your man card.

I'm OK with that. :)

Seven Samurai is one of my all-time biggest disappointments but as God is my witness it bores me and I much prefer Magnificent Seven, IMO a far superior film on every dimension.

The Kurosawa that needs to be there is Yojimbo.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

my goodness do the LOTR fanboys need to go play in traffic.

Bugger off. :D

But seriously, I wouldn't put the trilogy in my Top 25. It would probably go in my Top 100. They were well done, but hardly all-time cinematic masterpieces.

I definitely need to get around to seeing 1, 2, and 3, but I have my doubts any of them would go in my Top 10.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

The list includes ZERO Billy Wilder or Alfred Hitchcock. Thus it's kind of a silly list.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
2. The Godfather (1972)
3. The Godfather: Part II (1974)
4. The Dark Knight (2008)
5. 12 Angry Men (1957)
6. Schindler's List (1993)
7. Pulp Fiction (1994)
8. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
9. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
10. Fight Club (1999)
11. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
12. Forrest Gump (1994)
13. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
14. Inception (2010)
15. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
16. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
17. Goodfellas (1990)
18. The Matrix (1999)
19. Seven Samurai (1954)
20. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
21. City of God (2002)
22. Se7en (1995)
23. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
24. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
25. Life Is Beautiful (1997)

The IMDB list is entirely based on fan votes. For comparison, the AFI top 25

1. CITIZEN KANE (1941)
2. THE GODFATHER (1972)
3. CASABLANCA (1942)
4. RAGING BULL (1980)
5. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952)
6. GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)
7. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962)
8. SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993)
9. VERTIGO (1958)
10. THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939)
11. CITY LIGHTS (1931)
12. THE SEARCHERS (1956)
13. STAR WARS (1977)
14. PSYCHO (1960)
15. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)
16. SUNSET BLVD. (1950)
17. THE GRADUATE (1967)
18. THE GENERAL (1927)
19. ON THE WATERFRONT (1954)
20. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)
21. CHINATOWN (1974)
22. SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959)
23. THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940)
24. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (1982)
25. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)

Only four of the IMDB top 25 make the cut. #1 Shawshank comes in at #72 on the AFI list.

I have not seen 11, 12 or 18.

ETA: That list was compiled in 2007, the 10th anniversary of the original list.

There's a huge generational gap between the IMDB and the AFI lists. On IMDB there are only four films from before 1972; on the AFI only five films after.

And, of course, AFI excludes all foreign films.

There are people here who will cut you if you call it anything less than A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I think it's the biggest steaming pile in movie history and the laziest performance by director, writer, and actors I've ever witnessed. I'm sure the costume design was fine.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

Dx said awhile back he that hates old movies. So I'm not surprised.

I don’t hate them, I just don’t prefer them. I love The Godfather, I really liked His Girl Friday, and a lot of Buster Keaton’s stuff is hilarious. Some things just don’t speak to me. Others do.

I’ve seen clips of virtually all of them during my film studies course back in college. I’ve seen nearly all of Casablanca and I just didn’t find it to be worth finishing. Arabia and Gone require setting aside enough time. I’m sure there are others like that on the list.
