The dreaded "soon" word raises it's ugly head again

If "soon" is a problem for you, and you aren't a part of the solution ...

#50 Massachusetts Minutemen

Total - 3.999228
1 year change - +0.4954 (#32)
5 year change - +0.995728 (#49)
Last year: #50

It's been 5 years since UMASS finished .500 overall, and the last 3 years in Hockey East have been in the bottom 2 in the league. This year's roster has only 2 seniors, so hopefully a team with a lot of youth can grow together and advance up the ladder.

* This is what I'm planning for each team. Since I didn't develop the standings, I'm not sure why teams moved up or down - for instance I don't know why UMASS was "middle of the pack" this year. I'll do my best to get it done ASAP.

#49 Alaska Nanooks

Total: +4.094288
1 year change: +0.2375 (#37)
5 year change: +1.105088 (#46)
Last year: #49

Alaska has had 3 years above .500, and its first two years in the WCHA were above .500 in-conference; however, they were ineligible for the league and National Tournament. Statistically, Alaska was at or near the middle in the conference; 4th in offense and power play, 6th in defense and penalty killing. Continued seasons over .500 should help them move up.

#48 Mercyhurst Lakers

Total: 4.505563
1 year change: -.0029 (#51)
5 year change: 1.037563 (#48)
Last year: #48

The Lakers have had 4 years above .500, and won the regular season title in 2013-14 before falling to 5th in 2014-15. Mercyhurst has been better offensively than defensively; last year they had the 3rd best offense in the conference, but the 9th best defense (and the worst penalty-kill). A return to the top of Atlantic Hockey would help Mercyhurst move up the rankings next year.

#47 Holy Cross Crusaders

Total: 4.850984
1 year change: -0.2197 (#55)
5 year change: -0.01372 (#60)
Last year: #44 (down 3)

No team has fallen more in the last 5 years than Holy Cross (only 2 teams lost points, the other being Sacred Heart). They have been below .500 overall, and right around .500 in Atlantic Hockey, the last two years. They've also been good defensively (3rd in the league), but not good offensively (9th). The Crusaders will need to move up the league standings, and have some post-season magic, to move up the standings.

#46 Merrimack Warriors

Total: 5.253351
1 year change: +0.6442 (#27)
5 year change: +2.113151 (#40)
Last year: #47 (up 1)

Merrimack has been below .500 each of the last 3 years, and been in the bottom 2 of Hockey East the last two seasons. The Warriors had the worst offense in Hockey East, and a defense in the middle of the league. Despite those challenges, they did move up a spot; improvements in their offense this coming year might help them move further.

#45 Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves

Total: 6.409681
1 year change: +0.0426 (#47)
5 year change: +1.573581 (#42)
Last year: #43 (down 2)

2013-14 was the Seawolves only season above .500 since joining the WCHA in 1993; unfortunately, they were not able to repeat that success in 2014-15. Anchorage was out of the playoffs in the WCHA last year. Both the offense and defense were in the bottom 3 of the league in 2014-15. Returning to the success of 2013-14 will help the Seawolves move back up the standings, if they can find a way.

#44 Air Force Falcons

Total: 6.601822
1 year change: +0.1057
5 year change: +2.431422
Last year: #42 (down 2)

After making the NCAA tournament 5 times in 6 years, Air Force has now missed the National tournament for three years in a row. The overall record has been close to .500 for each of the last 3 seasons as well. The 3rd best conference offense was offset by the 7th best defense. A return to the top teams in Atlantic Hockey, and potential NCAA berths, will help move the Falcons up.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#43 Minnesota State Mavericks

Total: 7.211509
1 year change: +2.5667 (#14)
5 year change: +4.898409 (#26)
Last year: #46 (up 3)

The Mavericks have had a terrific three year stretch, with winning percentages over .600 and NCAA tournament berths in each year. Minnesota State won the WCHA regular season title last year, and was 2nd in 2013-14. Continued success like the last few years will help continue the Mavericks moving up the ladder.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#42 Princeton Tigers

Total: 7.330346
1 year change: +0.1332 (#40)
5 year change: +2.157446 (#39)
Last year: #41 (down 1)

The Tigers changed coaches after a poor 2013-14, and followed it up with another poor result last year; Princeton has had 4 straight years below .500, and finished last in the ECAC both of the last two years. The new staff will need to turn things around to get the Tigers moving up the list.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#41 Niagara Purple Eagles

Total: 7.689444
1 year change: -0.2319 (#56)
5 year change: +1.251344 (#45)
Last year: #40 (down 1)

After a regular season title and NCAA tournament appearance in 2012-13, the Purple Eagles have had two below .500 seasons, with only 7 wins last year. A traditional strong Atlantic Hockey team, Niagara looks to get back to winning hockey, and positive growth in 2015-16

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#40 Western Michigan Broncos

Total: 8.101531
1 year change: +0.129 (#43)
5 year change: +2.704131 (#35)
Last year: #39 (down 1)

After several strong seasons to close out the CCHA, the Broncos have slipped the last two years; last year was the first year below .500 since the 2009-10 season. Western will need to improve quickly, playing in a strong conference, in order to keep from sliding further.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#39 Nebraska Omaha Mavericks

Total: 10.44678
1 year change: +5.3863 (#6)
5 year change: +7.537578 (#20)
Last year: #45 (up 6)

A solid couple seasons in the NCHC, around .500 both years, turned into a terrific end of the year, with a Final Four birth. Although Providence took the Mavericks out in the semifinals, UNO should be pleased with the finish. Big jumps like this one won't come around without more tournament wins, however.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#38 RIT Tigers

Total: 11.27483
1 year change: +1.8687 (#18)
5 year change: +3.109331 (#32)
Last year: #38

RIT was able to turn a 3rd place finish in Atlantic Hockey into a league tournament title, and a win in the NCAA tournament. Last year was the first above .500 in the last three years for the Tigers; continued success will be needed to keep moving in the right direction.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#37 Bemidji State Beavers

Total: 12.49938
1 year change: +0.1825 (#38)
5 year change: +1.053977 (#47)
Last year: #37

The Beavers have yet to finish .500 since moving to the WCHA 6 years ago, but were only one game below this year. Bemidji was solid at both ends (#5 offense and #4 defense in conference) but not great in either. A couple more wins could get the team over .500, and move them up the list.
