The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

They really can’t yell at players? Wtf? Or… maybe more accurately, that’s the trend? I mean even zen master Phil Jackson yelled sometimes.

Sometimes is the thing...can't scream and yell all the time or it has no meaning. Having an occasion melt down of screaming and or a trash can kick or sticks getting tossed can be a useful tool in the box.

Also, are you guys happy with the pipeline of recruits? If not, losing some kids will have little impact on the next HC. Even if you are really excited about the recruits, let's say you get Hastings? If a kid committed to play for Tony Granato, he's gonna look elsewhere after you make a great hire? Doesn't matter either way, all about hiring the best coach.

If it is Hastings (and I darn sure hope it's not), when he took the Minnesota State job, he kept both assistants (Knott is still there, and Blue stayed 9 years before he left a year ago for a non-hockey job where he could be home) and looked to keep the guys already there and the recent commits. His first trip was to Latvia to make sure incoming freshman Teddy Blueger was still interested in coming to Kato. I think he would work awfully hard to keep the recruits who are already committed, although he might ask one or two to spend another year in juniors.

I’m shocked at that too. I only played peewee hockey and my coach yelled endlessly. You’re telling me a college kid can’t handle a coach yelling?

Would certainly put Osiecki in perspective for me. He looks like he could chew someone out for hours and not fatigue at all.

Brian Posick was on the Mike Heller show yesterday and he said that several coaches had reached out to him about the Wisconsin job and asked that he pass their names up the ladder. That seemed a bit odd to me but Posick has been associated with the program for a long time.

There’s “yelling,” then there’s “Bob Knight yelling.” One is perfectly acceptable these days, one isn’t. Not sure where on the spectrum these guys fall.

LOL on Oz (you are correct). I yelled at high school varsity lacrosse players (probably more than I should have). And they still talk to me and actually they came and sat by me for a UW hockey game this year. Certainly there are players that do and don't respond as well to that, but to not yell at all seems unreasonable to me.

Quick story, first round of lacrosse tournament and my defense is sleepwalking (like the BB team last night) and gives up 2 goals in the first quarter. I have the head coach call a TO and I come unglued on them. They responded and only gave up 3 goal over then next 3.5 quarters, but somehow we still lost 5-3. My son's last game in high school. Good memories even if it was a loss.

Certainly dont understand this. I wouldnt want a coach that passed his name up through a radio show. Thats not serious.

The search firm and UW already have their candidates. The posting of the job is for HR regs, little else.

I agree and they probably have been digging into candidates for a couple of months, which is why Mac's comments about not rushing to try and keep players makes me think it is someone that is going to in the tournament or playoffs depending on the coach.

Concur. Oddly college hockey HC jobs dont open up too often. Assts move around a fair amount, but I agree that their top two or tgree candidates are likely in the tournament.

Of course we could be way off too :p

I mean, lets keep it in perspective, TG wasn't fired bc he was or wasn't yelling or not allowing coaches to yell lol.

I think Al Davis had the right phrase cooned and that's why TG was ushered out, just win Baby.

While you’re right in a sense, yelling can be an excellent motivator to improve your play.

Whatever he tried didn't work. On we go to the next coach.

If we are waiting till the end of the NCAA tourney, I’ve got to think Rohlik is one of the top candidates.

I think Rhols, Hastings, Ferschweiler, Leaman...I mean any of the candidates are prob going to be in the tourney.

WI is one of the few schools that can outspend anyone in hockey for HC salary. I think TG with a subpar/bad record and pulling down $600K has to make the other schools shake their heads bc they cant compete at that level.

Yelling is very effective depending on the person, you have to understand your audience. If you yell at me, I'm going to show you, you sob. If you yell at my daughter, she'll shut right down. If you want to get results with her, it's all sugar and rainbows. That moves the needle for her and you get results.

Kinda sucks the tourneys are going to make us wait. The suspense is killing me.
