The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

True, but there are only a few teams we really recruit against...MN, St. Cloud, MN-Duluth, and Mankato.

And I mean that on a regional basis. Obviously recruits can come from all over but regionally is where we need to improve.

It actually is interesting when you look at the roster for OSU though. Rohlik poached guys from all over the place.

And TG poached Goal Caufield from him.

No to Mark for me. He’s been away from men’s game for 20 years, he’s in his 60’s and has a great gig with the ladies.

I agree. I love Todd and his articles but no way Carle comes from Denver

I know! Carle could be my #1 guy, because of his young age and success, but he's got such a good thing going in Denver.
(And he's got my Avalanche in his backyard!)

That's my thought. He's already at a top job and it's his alma mater. I can't believe he'd leave Denver for another NCAA job. Only NHL like Jim Montgomery.

Didn't Michigan State take a run at Hastings last year? If the goal is an existing HC:

Larson
Ferschweiler
Rohlik
Gadowsky (Just from watching on TV it seems Penn State is much more into hockey than Ohio State so this could be very unlikely)
Shawhan
Hastings
Largen

I worked my way down the PWR. Then is there any consideration at all to an eastern coach? For example, could you entice a Rand Pecknold, Greg Carvel with money? Any interest in someone like that?

Finally, I am sure there are examples of coaches who would at some point in their career embrace a new challenge. Is there any chance at all someone like Scott Sandelin could fall into that category? Is he UMD for life? I am not sure if Brad Berry is on thin ice at all at UND. Maybe the only place Sandelin would leave for is UND but as I always say it can't hurt to make the call. I would find Sandelin far more likely than Milewski mentioning David Carle.

The good news is that we should be the only opening among blue blood schools this off-season.

Unlike last year where it was Mich, MSU, BU, and BC all available in the same season.

Should help keep the quality candidates focused on the Kohl Center.

I was driving around for work yesterday at 4 pm when the press conference was going on and neither 1070 or 1310 carried it live. I had hoped maybe one would pick it up, but 1070 is running a multi-market program in the afternoon, so I thought 1310 might, but they seemed to have a canned sports update. I guess it's another example of how far the program has fallen. And at the press conference I did not hear any TV types asking questions, just print people.

Gadowsky (Just from watching on TV it seems Penn State is much more into hockey than Ohio State so this could be very unlikely)

Interestingly, Wisconsin averages more fans than Penn State. There's a lesson here for building new rinks. Interest and fan energy seems higher in a program that fills a 6100 seat arena than a program that puts 8000 into a 16,000 seat arena. Unfortunately for Wisconsin, they're stuck with the Kohl Center.

That's true but all of those openings went to alums anyway.

Something that needs to be considered here about attendance is that purchased tickets is completely different than scanned gate tix. Wisconsin hasnt put a genuine winner on the ice for fans to see since 13/14. And those teams were good but certainly not great. I think those attendance levels are really what the gap between actual followers and the casual fan are. The more you lose, the less casual fans exist.

As far as Pegula, Ive been there many times for Badger hockey games. Its a great arena, but if you're not a student, get ready to shell out $. Lower bowl seats are usually in the $40-$60 well in advance. Upper club is anywhere from $60-120 per ticket.so there is a lot of interest yes, but its not common man interest.

The thing about smaller places, it scrunches the lower bowl and reduces good viewing angles so the only really good seats to vkew all the action end up being in the club level.

For that matter the tix at Yost I bought last weekend were in club level for $30 and came with food/drink. Great old barn with great viewing.

If I were an tOSU fan I'd be a bit worried. Don't think I'd put money on Rohlik vs. The Field, but as of right now he's gotta have the best odds out of any one individual.

Worried. We simply can't out-money Wisconsin like we could with a Denver or SCSU. Our AD has always treated hockey like an afterthought too. The women are getting their rink only because of the national championship, and I don't see the AD stepping up to build Rohlik his own arena which would probably be enough for him to take his name out of consideration. Some hope in the belief that Wisconsin finally decides it's time to step outside of the family and see if that works better.

Leaving the coach question aside for a minute. I do honestly think it’s time for UW to consider a separate hockey only facility. But cap the seats at 10,000. Make it as much like the Colesium as possible (banners, beer, sold-out).

Not a Wisconsin fan but moved to Madison in the fall, so I've been keeping up with the badgers. I think Rohlik has to be considered the top guy for the job. Whether he wants it is a different question. After that, I could see them throwing a bunch of money at Fersch to get him to bite. Both BU and MSU were interested in Hastings last year, but I'm not sure how interested he was. Seemed like he might have just wanted to get a raise from Mankato. I think the odds for Sandelin and Carle are both basically zero. Larson I view in a similar light to Fersch. Should be an interesting search.

If they go the assistant route, I think that Demichel, Steve Miller, and Todd Knott would be the top choices there.

I know next to nothing about Miller other than the guy loves to move around and he's a great assistant coach. But by now I get the sense he imply has zero desire to be a head coach.

CHN has an article up about Nate Leaman from Providenve. Even though he is a midwest guy, all his playing and coaching experience is in the East.

At Union he treaded water until basically year 7 when he got them into the NCAAs, then bolted for Providence where he certainly has been more successful, but Union won the NCAAs with basically his guys so there is something to be said for his recruiting.

Can Wisconson tread water for 7yrs. In a word, no.
Can Leaman come from the East Coast and make a splash into western hockey with tons more resources...maybe.

At this point I certainly dont think Miller is where we want to go...all he has been is an asst and has pushed away any HC jobs.

Good that theres not a lot of high profile vacancies this year.

If you got a Todd Knott as a midwest recruiter with a huge raise to come as Associate Head Coach, and Eastern coach with good systems could work IMO.

Concur. There are certainly plenty of options out there. And maybe that was part of Mac's thinking in not letting Granato go last year due to all the vacancies and having to fight for coaches. This year, the top tiers are settled and there wont be a lot of movement at that level via Big10, NCHC, HE.

With those "Big 4" openings last year they all went with alums though (two were already on staff, one was HC in USHL, one was USNTDP HC). So nothing really shifted like a Motzko from SCSU to Minnesota. I imagine that's the kind of hire you guys all want.
