The GQP Thread: I'm even sick of that fuck's number and, anyway, he's gone (for now)

Keep worrying about the guy who's been out of office for 18 months.

Inflation, gas, fuel oil, baby food, now tampons.

"It's the economy, stupid."

If dump or his R defenders cared about anyone's economy but their own, they would stop resisting efforts to address climate change. The economic impact of climate change will make covid-related economic problems seem like a walk in the park.

They already are.

This comment sounds weird and stupid, and it obviously is on its own, but it also reveals something important about the Trump-worshippers. Sicatoka isn't a stupid person, but he and a lot of others will play along with the stupidity of the Fox talking points, if it means they can continue to accumulate power. Notice that his only concern is who is in office. Character doesn't matter. Truth doesn't matter. Justice is long gone. Only power matters. That laser-like focus on grabbing power to do as much as possible to suppress and overwhelm individual freedoms which might contest his own position is the only goal, and it's the reason the authoritarians are winning. The pillaging of the US will continue until voters realize that we're in a fight for our lives against the worst infection of moral evil we've witnessed since the Civil War.

I have been reading about the intellectual origins of fascism when it was a 19th century anti-Enlightenment, anti-liberal movement, long before it became associated with racism and even with nationalism. The early proto-fascists were very similar to the Marxists in seeking an "escape from liberalism," and an end to the "debating society on the edge of the abyss" of parliamentary democracy.

Proto-fascism is deliberately and self-consciously irrational. Its thesis is politics and society cannot be legalistic and rational because the later pre-suppose the former and not vice-versa. To be authentically and fully human, there is something beyond law and Enlightenment Reason that binds us as political and social beings. Previously, that was God and Clan. But because we cannot go back. "God is dead and it is we who have killed him," so the only way to go forward but to retain authenticity is to erect something in place of God and Clan. For Clan, we can simply extend to the Tribe -- some "legitimate" subset of the Nation ('Real Murica'). For God, is it a search for some other foundational grounding which justifies itself. Fascists found this in Sovereignty. But they interpreted Sovereignty not as voting, but as the "silent true heart of the people," as expressed in the man strong enough for them to trust him with absolute power.

That's the roots of the cult of Dump, right there. And you can taste the hunger for certainty in people like Sic. Denied black and white meaning in a tolerant, subjective, multicultural world of greys, they strike out in fear and anger to grasp that comfort and well-being of childhood again, by finding the Strongest and hiding under his legs. This is the fundamental cowardice of the Right, even before you add on all the ugliness of their misogyny and racism later.

Before conservatives were bad people, and even before they were ignorant people, they were weak people.

Sic most definitely is not stupid, and he has a sizeable fund of knowledge. He generally keeps his sense of humor, and he doesn't yell and scream or use ad hominem attacks. He's not one of those gettable votes that are so important now--he'll probably never vote anything close to liberal. But he's not too unlike many educated, sensible, successful and otherwise kind people who do are conservative by nature but whose votes might be gotten. Like most here, I have a small handful of relatives who are like that--easily my better in many respects. It's frustrating because as much as I'd like to maintain my respect for those people, the dreadful seriousness of what is happening makes that very difficult. That ignorant, angry tribalist tail is wagging the red dog, and the dog needs to be put in its kennel.

That said, I'm glad we have a very small handful of posters who are willing to disagree with the majority of us and take the guff that goes along with it. These political threads often feel too much like members of the choir preaching to each other.

Trumpets: That’s not fair, he inherited everything from Obama! He has to clean up Obama’s mess!

also Trumpers: Let’s leave the previous administration alone

*fingers crossed* Please let the Bobert/Cruz rumors be true. Please let the Boebert/Cruz rumors be true. Please *fingers crossed*

Have you guys seen the pictures of Team Trump taken in the White House on election night? Yeah, that looks like a group of folks who thought they were winning.
