The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

curious what you guys think of that call...sure looked to me like samaras tripped himself. gutsy call.

That was my thought as well.

That was my initial thought also. But on the next time through, it appeared to me that (a) the contact may* have causes Samaras to lose his balance, which caused him to kick the ground, which caused him to trip himself and (b) there was no question that there was body to body contact, and the body to body contact would have occurred even if Samaras hadn't kicked the ground. So I didn't have a problem with the call.

*big qualification here. Samaras may have kicked the ground before the contact occurred, which negates my point (a). I didn't look at the replay again to verify. But even if that's true, I can't get by my point (b). But seriously, I wouldn't argue with anyone who says I'm wrong. I didn't look at the replay again, and I'm even less of a soccer reffing expert than I am as a hockey reffing expert.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Obviously we have the benefit of HD, various camera angles and super slow motion, etc. I just never saw enough contact to warrant a penalty. Certainly an easy 2nd guess on my part. That was a tough one for the ref.

Hoping Ecuador can find a way through today, would like to see another CONMEBOL showdown in round of 16.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Honduras needs a five goal swing to advance. Probably won't happen but it would be awesome if CONCACAF could get 100% representation in the Round of 16.

I don't see them beating Switzerland at all, let alone badly enough to contribute to a five-goal swing in their GD with regard to Ecuador. Still, it'd be cool, and you never know.

Must be things are opening up in the other game also. They had two goals in quick succession.

Iran scored to make it 2-1. Maybe I don't understand the offsides rule in all of its aspects, but Iran literally had six men offsides on the pass, by at least a yard. Flag didn't go up, simple cross to the man in the center and it's in the net. Realizing they can actually have offense, Iran pushed in an attempt to try for the comeback to win and advance, but quickly turned it over and Bosnia scored on a 2 on 1.

Where they behind the ball? Then the players don't matter...I'm watching the other game so I have no idea the situation.

The pass came from outside the box so it wasn't like it was just all Iran and the goalie, there was a line of Bosnians in between. I actually missed it too but saw the replay so I didn't see the full play, but the pass was from about 25 yards out, I would assume on a free kick that was blocked into the wall or something for that many players to be congregated in that area.

Ok, watched the replay. The one player who actually played the ball was onside, the rest of the players who were offside were not "actively seeking the play" and therefore irrelevant. Its a good call, yet I understand why you'd be confused.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So Iran barely escapes the ignominy of not scoring a single goal all tournament.

Nigeria is the first African team to make the round of 16. I fervently hope that Ghana does not join them there at the USA's expense!

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So the tournament has 11 of 16 spots have been determined and 8 of those 11 are not from UEFA.

With Iran's goal this become the first tournament since 1998 when every team scored at least 1 goal.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I'm really hoping Honduras can pull off the result against Switzerland today. It would be wonderful if all 4 CONCACAF clubs could get a result with 3 of them going through to the round of 16.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Well, Switzerland scored already.

Current Group E standings if results hold (pts, GD):
FRA: 7, +6
SUI: 6, 0
ECU: 4, 0
