The definitive tournament speculation thread

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Don't worry division3 hockey can be a little confusing however I think I've finally figured it out. It's all RIT's fault.

Yes, it seems I have seen that before. But since I have a son who attends SMC (lax, not hockey) I should have had a clue.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Overall record and the games that count towards the regional rankings (in region games against DIII competition)

So far I'm with you. But why do the rankings (if Prez has them correct from the NCAA) have Salem State listed as 15-5-2 for ranking purposes, and Pairwise has them at 10-5-2 in the "National" comparison. What am I missing? In the Pairwise Eastern comparison they are the same as the NCAA. Can I use that term (NCAA) without paying them?:D

Nobody knows why, but the USCHO "National" records are wrong for several teams.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Well, where do I start. For the most part, I don't have a huge problem with these rankings. That said, the one issue I have a huge deal with is where they have Utica. The Pioneers tie the #2 team Elmira and drop 4 spots? If the tie was so bad why didn't Elmira drop 4 spots at least for tying a team ranked lower than them? It makes absolutely no sense. Aside from that though, the top 11 spots of NCAA's rankings mirror mine with the only differences being teams flip flopping with each other (Neumann/Castleton, Manhattanville/Hobart). The NCAA also has not jumped on the Salemwagon yet either.

So, really, for the East Utica is my only extreme issue. The minor issues would be Salem being too low, and Midd and Williams still being ranked.

For the West, still not sure what they are doing, but trying to mimic what they did last week I did a pretty good job with mine. I had UWS 2 spots too low and I dropped MSOE and kept UWEC ranked. I still think my rankings make more sense but it doesn't really matter because none of these teams are getting in the NCAA's without winning their conference titles. IE: Stout is done. UWS should have an outside shot if they run the table and lose in the NCHA title game, but even that would be borderline at best.

Again.....Utica.....not sure what that is about.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

We won't mention that Elmira also lost a game this weekend. It is as if someone woke up and said, "Hey, this is Utica we are talking about here!"

Matt / Josh

Is the only ranking that matters the final (secret) ranking?

Yes and No.

Yes in the fact that is lays out each regions 3 teams under consideration for Pool C. That said, these rankings determine the ranked teams for the record vs ranked criteira. If a team drops out of these early rankings they still count as being ranked for that criteria purpose. Or at least that's what this year's NCAA handbook says. The last few years this was not the case.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

FWIW, here is the list of the ranked teams and their RNK.

East
1- Oswego 8-2-0
2- Elmira 9-5-2
3- Plattsburgh 6-3-1
4- Norwich 5-4-1
5- Neumann 7-6-2
6- Castleton 4-2-0
7- Utica 6-7-1
8- Geneseo 3-4-1
9- Hobart 6-8-1
10- Manhattanville 4-9-1
11- Salem State 2-1-0
12- Hamilton 2-3-2
13- Williams 0-5-2
14- Middlebury 1-3-3
15- Bowdoin 2-2-1

1- St. Norbert 6-3-1
2- Adrian 4-1-1
3- Hamline 5-1-0
4- Wis. Stout 4-6-0
5- UWS 5-6-0
6- St. Thomas 2-5-0
7- MSOE 1-5-1

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Here are some additional figures. I am not exactly sure what they mean, if indeed they mean anything at all. But I found them interesting nonetheless.

Here is the ranked teams RNK vs teams outside their own conference. To better show the trend I stumbled upon I will group the teams by conference

SUNYAC 11-3-2
Oswego 4-2-0
Plattsburgh 5-0-1
Geneseo 2-1-1

ECAC East 7-4-1
Norwich 4-3-1
Castleton 3-1-0

ECAC West 4-7-3
Elmira 1-2-1
Hobart 2-1-0
Manhattanville 1-0-1
Neumann 0-2-1
Utica 0-2-0

MASCAC 0-0-0
Salem St 0-0-0

NESCAC 2-10-2
Middlebury 0-3-1
Hamilton 1-3-0
Williams 0-3-1
Bowdoin 1-1-0

NCHA 1-3-0
St. Norbert 0-1-0
Wis. Stout 1-0-0
UWS 0-2-0

MIAC 5-4-0
Hamline 3-1-0
St. Thomas 2-3-0

MCHA 2-3-0
Adrian 1-1-0
MSOE 1-2-0

So, as you can see, the ECAC West and NESCAC did not perform well at all outside their conference against tough competition while the ECAC East did well and the SUNYAC was outstanding.

In the west, the NCHA had a poor record but with a small sample size. The MIAC performed well considering they are historically viewed as second fiddle to the NCHA.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Again, I will make my annual cant-miss prediction: The NCAA will pull something out of their butts and do something NOBODY predicts. I'm right every year about that one.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

With the oddness of the West rankings, my naivete can't help but make me think that they're up to something.

my guess is that they are ranking teams that shouldn't be ranked in the west, then they will switch which teams are ranked from week to week, making more ranked teams in the west so that teams have a better record against ranked teams to try and sneak a pool C out west.

 I hope you are posting with a phony name, as I think you just proved you know too much.......

That's the only way they'll win a comparison against an Eastern team because the SOS is normally in an East team's favor, then the win% and record versus ranked will be more important for the west.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

What's odd about them?

The only difference between my computer rankings that I do for D3WH and the NCAA's list is that MSOE and St. Thomas aren't in my top 7 - but they are 8th and 9th.
