The definitive tournament speculation thread

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

If Duke, UNC, NC State, Maryland and Virginia Tech decide to go varsity, does that mean that BC will have to join the ACC fot ice hockey?? :D

I assume the question is conference by-laws. If they were the MASCAC, that answer would be yes :D :D

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Crying about matchups is the cry of the pessimist - if you are worried that somebody will beat you, and don't think it is fair that you have to play them so early, then you are saying loud and clear, "we can't win this unless somebody beats Norwich or Plattsburgh, or whoever for us." The only real fairness issue is that the higher seed should have home ice. That's what you earn with your reg season performance. You can't say we lost the championship because we had to play Utica, or whoever. If you lose, it doesn't matter if you lose in the first round, or the quarters, or the semis or the finals - the result is the same you are not the champion.

As it appears this comment was directed towards me, I'll address it real quick.

I really don't see how I was crying about the potential matchups Oswego could face in the NCAAs. I did write that having to face Norwich or Plattsburgh in the quarters was hardly a reward but I would say that was more a compliment to those programs than it was a complaint. I have confidence that Oswego can get the job done come March no matter who they play.

As for inquiring further about the seeding, Josh answered my question which pretty much makes the point I brought up moot anyways, according to the projections. I just wasn't sure how the seeding was done for the quarters after the field gets trimmed down to 8.

Side Note: I thought I remembered someone posting a link a couple years back that had all the DIII games played in every NCAA tournament since it began in 1984. Tried finding it again and can't. Does anyone still know where to find that info?

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Love the Klein bottle - maybe that should be the NCAA D3 logo.

I figure that since the NCAA is so strapped for cash I'd save the folks in Indy the cost of hiring a firm to take the mobius to a whole new level. Klein Bottle. Done.

It was actually your idea...

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

I see your comments on COP concerning Adrian, but I'm not buying it. Not only is the OWP bad, it's really bad. If the committee is choosing to downplay SOS, they are making a historical change. SOS was the argument used to keep Adrian (and even earlier, MSOE) out when the MCHA did not have an AQ.

...historical change indeed. You may have to tweak your computer program to keep up with this new evolution in the NCAA ranking process.

It wasn't directed at you - this is just one of those things that comes up every year and your post touched on it ... "well if we hadn't had to play blah, blah, blah in the (first round, quarters, semis), If would have been fairer."

Somehow Oswego folks seem to think I'm picking on them ... I'm not. I'm just trying to get people to look at things from a logical, rational perspective. A couple of fan bases seem to have gone around the bend from time to time, and I'm trying to reel them in. Sometimes my dry sense of humor gets me in trouble. Dosen't always play well on the internet.

The only people I'm really out for right now are NESCAC people, and, of course, RIT :D.

Indeed, I may. We will have to see how it pans out when the last shot is fired. The East is pretty much in line with it, the West is not. Since I have the national edition that I post here and the West version that shows up on D3WH, if things persist I may have to make some adjustments in the West. The huge question is how things get sewed together for the final selection. If I were an Adrian fan, I'd be a lot unhappy. As in "Why is SOS less important now that we don't need it to get in?" "We could have gotten in 3 years ago, we could have gotten in 2 years ago."

I'd like to think I played a small part in getting the ball rolling by accidentally posting the Mobius strip that wasn't actually a Mobius strip :)

It was indeed inspired by the poster below. I figure maybe you could sell it to the NCAA for money to help support D3WH. If they'd spend 3 million for a faulty moebius, think how much more they would pay for this concept. :D

Kind of like trying to argue that pi or e rational..

:)

Excellent job as usual Josh ! Thanks.

You covered the issue of insular schedules well.......at least in terms of the NCHA.
The MCHA's 20 game conference schedule is also restrictive and I believe a change would be healthy........... to improve the hockey. I love the idea of a schedule that would result more interconference play.
You suggest however that the NCHA should be doing it with the goal being to inflate their win % for tournament ranking.
If that's the case scheduling tendencies would be to avoid playing the best Non Conf. competition.

I'm not in favour of that........chasing metrics shouldn't be what the games are all about ....or am I missing something ?

from D3Westhockey
".........meaning that for the NCHA to successfully compete for at-large bids on an annual basis, and create the dream 6-5 scenario for the West, they must embrace their other Western foes. Not only the MIAC, but the MCHA. Only by inflating their win percentages in non-conference play, and then increasing strength of schedule when those teams begin to lose in conference play, can the West ever realize the dream of five teams playing in March."

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Here's something that is either a typo or a change that we missed. From the DIII Hockey Championship Handbook:

Ranked opponents are considered ranked once they appear one time in the sports official rankings.

This is a real plus for Adrian if true - If they sweep MSOE and MSOE drops, they still get 2 wins against a ranked team. Given some editing issues elsewhere in the document, it could also be language left over from 2007, which was when ranked once = always ranked was last employed.

Josh, great analysis but one question... why would Hamline get a bye into the QF with Adrian/St. Norbert playing in round 1? Why wouldn't Hamline play Adrian in round 1 with St. Norbert getting the bye?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: nevermind, I see the "travel restriction" note now.

Distance - the NCAA won't pay to fly teams in the first round, and has to fly teams that are more than 500 miles apart. That means the only possible first rounder is Adrian at SNC

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

First round okay.....quarterfinals though can the NCAA fly 1 team...I heard that the NCAA frowns upon it but it is allowed to have a quarterfinal fly

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

If Adrian were to beat SNC in Josh's scenario, they would have to fly Hamline to Adrian - They try to avoid it at all costs.
