But how can Syracuse be the top seeded team in the West? They aren't really regional tournaments - they actually used to be. I remember as a young kid that schools that played in the Western regional were all from the West, and winning the regional meant that you were the champion of your region - there is not way that Syracuse would be considered the best team in the West. My point is that in D1, regional labels are used only for convenience sake and in DIII, they mean everything.
Actually the term 'west' is in reference to the fact that the Western Region finals are held in Salt Lake City. The preliminary rounds are held all over the country and ot neccisarily in their 'named region.' I actually think this example of showing Vermont vs Syracuse playing in Buffalo shows that the NCAA is concerned with geographic poximity. Now, Gonzaga playing in Buffalo in the opening round certainly shows no conern for geographic proximity...
