Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

[as Tessio and Hagen walk to Michael's house, they are met by a bodyguard, Willi Cicci]
Willi Cicci: Sal... Tom... the boss says he'll come in a separate car. He says for you two to go on ahead.
Tessio: Hell, he can't do that; that screws up all my arrangements.
Willi Cicci: Well, that's what he said.
Tom Hagen: I can't go with you either, Tessio.
[just then, Michael's bodyguards materialize around them, Tessio understands everything]
Tessio: [to Hagen] Tell Mike it was only business. I always liked him.
Tom Hagen: He understands that.
Willi Cicci: [removing Tessio's gun] Excuse me, Sally.
Tessio: Can you get me off the hook, Tom? For old times' sake?
Tom Hagen: [shakes his head] Can't do it, Sally.
[Hagen watches sadly as Tessio is led by Cicci and the others to a waiting car]

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Oh c'mon Brent, I'm not implying she's attractive for someone my age. Jeebus, no. I'm saying she's still got more than her fair share of mental faculties intact at 94.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you here...

I thought you were referring to some TMZ inside scoop that she was still...uh, playing the field. Nothing personal to you, not one bit.

Saw the Abe thing this AM and my forst thought was this thread. I need a life

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

You will hate it when it does Les. Jenny and I did and decided to go back part time almost immediately. I no longer think I could ever fully retire.

I don't plan on totally retiring although I think I could tolerate that just fine. I probably will teach. I also have a number of hobbies that I could easily still not have enough time for.

The Computer based records have trashed my neck. I wake up with a HA everyday except one (when Ihave had 2 days off in a row), I have lateral epicondylitis from mousing/ using the touch pad. I can't tolerate a day hunched over a laptop. If I could practice somewhere paper based..... and without dealing with insurance... and we both know that is most likely not in existence. There has to be an avenue to help people that does not involve fighting to do the right thing and then spending hours clicking buttons to prove you did what they want.

Your last sentences sums up why Jenny and i shut our office and most of the practice down. Add to what you wrote that i absolutely refuse to have some 19 year old girl on the phone (which no medical training), popping gum in my ear, telling me who to see, what to prescribe, what tests i can order and what surgery I can perform. i used to ask them when they graduated from Medical School and when they could not reply ask them how is it then that they can practice medicine without a license. Their response, always the same, was they are not practicing medicine or telling me what I can do but only what they will pay for. i was free to do whatever I felt necessary and write whatever prescriptions I wanted but they simply would not pay for any of it.
Most patients did not understand any of that and simply wanted to do only what did not cost them anything. If they think that is providing good medical care, then let them go along with it. I could not abide it. Now it is easier for me. We still consult but anything we do is pro bono. if i do not charge for something, i do not have put up with getting approval from an insurer or write what they want (even if it is totally not indicated or the best medication). I am fortunate having practiced mostly before all of this control and regulation.

My sister retired a couple of years ago after about 35 years as a pediatrician. She would have worked longer, but the electronic records/meaningful use requirements (and a couple of business-aggressive partners) just sucked too much of the joy out of practice for her. She never married--poured her heart and soul into treating kids. Now that she has had time to regain some energy, she is looking to reengage somehow in a limited fashion.

I ask them for their full name and credentials as I will be documenting in the chart their refusal to OK a treatment I, physically seeing the patient, have deemed necessary. That gets me to the supervisor almost every time. They won't give me what I need but I get their name.
I wish most of my patients only want to do what will cost them nothing- many of mine feel they are entitled to get what ever they want, when they want it because they should get what they want. Period. More and more of that. Couple that with a PHO that is ridiculously obstructionist and unashamedly all about the money and I have had enough. When the PHO refuses a referral for someone to see the Doc they have had for 25+ yrs and doesn't even sugar coat the reasoning.... Everything is about $$$. The PHO sold their souls for the almighty $ to most of the insurance co. The Specialists outnumber the PCPs so they make out fairly well. The PCPs are getting slammed. I know of 3 Docs getting out and more than a few NP/PAs. One National survey said 63% of Primary providers described themselves as burnt out and very dissatisfied. I would say that is about right. The new Docs coming out seem to think they should have business hours and no hols or WE> The new NPs coming out seemed to be trained to be martyrs like Joan of Arc. I am way too cynical to have the patience for it. (I obviously am one of those 63%.)

Yep- I got married and had a kid but lost most of my social contacts, have a wrecked bod and feel the same way. I have a gift for what I do but they won't let me do it the right way anymore. At some point I will probably find some volunteer thing to feed the need.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Anyone mention Celine Dion's manager/husband. I could swear I saw it here, but now can't find it.

In any case, you know that her heart will go on*.

*I've been waiting all weekend to do that one. :D
With the Power Of Love.

(first Celine song I ever heard)
