The Dead Thread 2024

Emily Bear's Instagram post after Quincy Jones' death. https://www.instagram.com/p/DB9EwkJPcEV/ I think that Emily was the last person whom Quincy mentored.

And yes, Emily did originally call the song which she wrote about Quincy "For Q". She eventually changed the name to "Q". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SUsTXTbE68 The song appears on Emily's album "Diversity" which was produced by Jones in 2013. That album was the first album that Jones produced for a solo artist since Michael Jackson's "Bad" in 1987.

Child prodigies with a lot of talent meet many famous people. E.g., Emily Bear played at the White House at age 6 for George W. Bush. These are getting older. Does anyone know how this guy is doing these days? I wonder how they came to be wearing matching outfits.

Had to say the long goodbye to our cat this morning after she walked into our lives nearly 14 years ago; literally, she walked into my wife's office. The cat distribution system was in full effect that day. She enjoyed chirping at birds, chasing strings of all sizes, and making sure all laps were sufficiently warmed. Knew it was time as she had declined significantly over the last couple of weeks, and we take comfort that she's no longer in pain, but it still sucks. First time in 15 years there's been no cat in the house. Not looking forward to telling the kiddo about it tonight.

Obligatory cat tax:

Sorry man. Cat person here, and I understand how difficult that is, even when it's a merciful ending.

You have all my sympathy uno, and I send forth some of my love from my cats into the void for yours.

Not the least hard thing to bear when
they go from us, these quiet friends,
is that they carry away with them so
many years of our lives.

Yet, if they find warmth therein, who would
begrudge them those years that they
have so guarded?

And whatever they take,
be sure they have deserved.

Completely unrelated, Dorothy Allison.

One of her many powerful and painful poems, about when she was raped as a child:

That summer I did not go crazy,
spoke instead to my mama who insisted
our people do not go crazy.

We make instead that sudden evening
silence that follows the shotgun blast.

We stand up alone twenty years after
like a scarecrow in a field
pie-eyed, toothless, naming
our enemies and outliving them.

That summer I talked to death
like an old friend, a husky voice
whispering up from my cunt, echoing
around my knees, laughing.

That summer I did not go crazy
but I wore
very close
very close
to the bone.

Sorry for your loss uno. I rescued Phoebe 6 years ago when she was 3. A couple of months after the rescue she got sick, took her to the vet, then to an animal hospital, and $2K later found out she had chronic kidney disease. She's still with me though.

My only remaining dog is 13 and has kidney disease. I’m not looking forward to the progression

Sorry to hear that uno.

We have 3 adopted cats that are now nearly fully domesticated that live half-in and half-out of the house, and my wife feeds 2 other strays in the neighborhood. No idea what we'll do with the 3 when we finally decide to move back, although thanks to Trump that thought is now on hold.
