Lake Placid, N.Y. — Freshman Cody Keefer scored on a breakaway with 39.4 seconds left to lift the St. Norbert men's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Oswego State (N.Y.) in an NCAA Division III semifinal Friday afternoon at Herb Brooks Arena.
"That game to me felt like it went four overtimes," said St. Norbert head coach Tim Coghlin, who is 365-103-39 in his 17th season. "It was a great victory for our guys. I was very proud of our effort, our demeanor and the way we were able to fight back."
St. Norbert took a 1-0 lead at 18:01 of the first period as sophomore forward Johan Ryd stole the puck from an Oswego defender and scored on a breakaway. Oswego evened the score at 1-1 with just less than 3 minutes remaining in the second period as senior forward Neil Musselwhite beat Green Knights goaltender B.J. O' Brien with a blast from the left point.
The Green Knights regained the lead 4:18 into the third period as senior forward Tyler Allen poked home the rebound of a shot by Keefer. Oswego's Justin Fox then beat O'Brien to tie it, 2-2.
St. Norbert defenseman Sam Tikka put the Green Knights up, 3-2, less than 2 minutes later, but Oswego tallied with only 2:32 left in the game to once again tie it, setting the stage for Keefer to score the game-winner.
After an Oswego defender attempted to glove the puck down and play it near the Oswego blue line, Keefer raced in, stole it off the defender's stick and buried his breakaway chance.
"I was actually going to go for a line change," Keefer said. "I saw him try to play the puck, though, so I tried to apply some pressure, it bounced over his stick and I ended up going in on the breakaway."
Though the game was tied on three occasions, St. Norbert never trailed.
"I actually thought (Oswego's) ability to keep coming back was better than our ability to answer because they were answering the bell so quickly," Coghlin said. "That said, I was pleased with our ability to get back in the flow right away after Oswego would score."
St. Norbert (24-3-3), the 2008 national champion, will play Norwich (Vt.) in the title game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
