The Countries: Forget it, Burkina Faso, Michigan is still the worst.

It's ugly there. They took done the Tiananmen square memorial at the university. Now they're shutting down the news. I feel bad for Hong Kong. They're about to go through some things :-(

So… begin the “tanks rolling down the streets” countdown?

Doubtful. That's a bad look nowadays, particularly for the CCP, who crave international respect and influence. By combining 21st century technology with old school tactics like informants, they have built the kind of surveillance state that Erich Mielke and his Stasi could only dream of. At this point the goal is to utilize the vast data warehouses of info they have on anyone who is a citizen of or has ever been to China, or used their apps (TikTok, WeChat, etc.), together with their military-police forces, to quickly "black bag" anyone who gets out of line before they can start any serious riots or uprisings. They can easily do this now that they have a friendly puppet regime installed in Hong Kong.

I'm quite sure they have been actively attempting the same regime change in Taiwan, but that is another animal. Unlike HK, the CCP has had zero influence on the island since 1949, relations with the current ruling DPP of Taiwan are openly hostile, and the vast majority of Taiwan's citizens oppose reunification and hypothetical CCP rule. Even Taiwan's current primary opposition party (KMT), which opposes Taiwanese nationalism, nevertheless favors maintaining the status quo while opening up cross-strait relations and trade deals with the mainland, as opposed to reunification or any sort of "One Country, Two Systems" deal like HK had before the crackdown.

China and Russia are being so fucking stupid right now it's depressing. Fuck all of them.

Are they though? The US was weakened severely by Dump and the USG is still a basketcase even with the Nazis in the minority.

The American rich run the entire world as their personal piggy bank. The rich of those other countries run their governments and want in on the looting.

It's possible the US may vomit out the Nazis and begin to repair itself, so why not make the grab now? The Russians get back their Eastern European Near Abroad to prepare for the inevitable day that Western Europe fully rearms and competes with them for those slave states. China likewise to dominate the Asia-Pacific region and impose their own Monroe Doctrine.

This is how we move from a unipolar to a multipolar world.

Not to mention Putin's not getting and younger. The Chinese think in 300-year chunks, but the Russians think no further than the current Czar's lifespan.

I just finished the new fiction book “termination shock.” Not for most as it’s really long, but a good read. Premise is fast forward a decade or so, nations are crippling under heat and sea level rise so nations start doing their own geoengineering on weather, which of course affects everyone else. Then China and India get pissed and start their own shit.

it’s fiction but I’ve no doubt this is about how it’s going to play out soon enough

If China is thinking in 300 year chunks why bother with Hong Kong and Taiwan. It makes zero sense.

For the same reason France retook Calais in 1558, or the Germans absorbed Bremen, Hamburg, and Frankfurt in 1871. You don't want challenges to your sovereignty anywhere near your core territory, and particularly if you are an authoritarian state you don't want free cities setting a bad example (and beaming anti-government news into your territory).

Ok, we'll see if it works. I don't see the relevance though. We live in a global community now. Next door, an ocean away makes no difference.

Because if you control Taiwan, you control the chip market. theres also The Who strategic waterways like the strait of Taiwan and the South China Sea.

I get that but it's all irrelevant now. The World will find a way to go somewhere else for chips. They're not going to deal with a bully. We used them for cheap shit, we'll just start using someone else.

The red states.

(I kid. They don't have the educated population.)
