The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

ESPN has turned hockey into a fringe sport. :D Maybe they will have to cover it by your logic.

ESPN went back in time and allowed the Norris family to delay expansion by decades to keep their monopoly over the professional league for the sport, leaving it regional at best?

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

Quite happy with the in-depth post game coverage ESPN provided for the first semi-final game.

Actually, the commercials that were shown 30 seconds after the final buzzer lasted longer than the post game comments when they came back. There weren't on the air from the venue for more than 90 seconds in total following the game. I expect the same tonight. Broadcast starts at 8:00, puck drops by 8:03 and they are off the air 2 1/2 minutes after the buzzer including the 60 seconds of commercials. I hope the game goes 6 OTs just to **** off ESPN.

Right, E*******SPN gives little to no credit at a time when credit is hugely deserved. End of program and move on to College Baseball...

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

I liked that they spent as much time talking about the late game as the could, since people will have heard of those schools.

As for the lack of post game....what, you weren't interested in pre-game for regular season college baseball?

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

OK, my anger at ESPN is really starting to boil over now... It's probably good that I don't live next door to any ESPN executives.

Why do they find it necessary to go to a mini-sportscenter just because they have a couple of extra minutes to fill since the first game went a little longer than they had planned for? Did they even leave Denver between games of the women's Final Four on Sunday? Did anyone happen to see that there were nearly as many empty seats for Notre Dame's regional final in the women's tourney in North Carolina as there were for ALL FOUR regional finals in hockey? I'm not expecting an hour of pregame hype (like the women's Final Four) but once 8:00 p.m. hits, stay in Tampa for God's sake. Are they so afraid that they will lose even more viewers if people just wandering by will immediately turn away if they don't see yet ANOTHER story about the NFL? And if so, aren't they just going to flip channels as soon as they see it is college hockey? What, they play COLLEGE hockey....?

Starman had a column earlier in the week about how we should be taking our complaints about the horrible way the NCAA is presenting the tournament to fans to the source. He said he'd find out who best to direct our complaints to and post it. Does anyone know if he actually followed through with this info? Or absent that, does anyone have any idea who to direct those concerns to? The devaluation of this tournament by ESPN has got to be stopped. I find it hard to believe college hockey is any less popular than the other sports they seem to give as much or more attention to, like women's hoops and Lacrosse. I believe it is tied firmly to their lack of interest in the NHL and the NHL's refusal to give in to ESPN in the season immediately following the lockout when ESPN wanted to show NHL games without paying a rights fee. They have just decided to thumb their noses at all things hockey.

Eff ESPN and eff the NCAA while we're at it.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

What, nothing on Melrose saying the 1980 team was made up mostly of players from these two teams (MN and BC)? :p

Gary Melrose and Barry Thorne could have at least taken some time to learn names and grab pronunciation guides from the teams playing in the tournament this year. Perenteau, Rau and Seratorre are having their names butchered all during that first period, and not a word has been dropped in respect to Erick Haula being MN's leading point getter. I'd bet that if I knew more about BC's team, much could be the same said for them, too.

Except when they explicitly stated that after talking about BC's top scorers, right before mentioning Bjugstad as the Gophers' leading goal scorer.

Edit: And they just mentioned both of them again. Did you hear it this time? ;)

I didn't hear it the first time around. I certainly did hear the mentions during the second.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

Gary Thorne is not a college hockey guy so, yes, he messes up names. Regardless, it's nice to have a professional play-by-play commentator who is able to keep up with the speed of the game.

Thorne used to call UMaine games...he is a college hockey guy. It's just not his day job.

Yeah I wasn't insinuating that he doesn't know college hockey. Thanks for clarifying, I didn't know that he used to call Maine games.
Umm, that's exactly what you were saying.

Yesterday - Tampa
Today - Baltimore

Guess they didn't cover his per diem.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

I watch Mike & Mike as I'm getting ready in the am for about 15 minutes while I'm in the bathroom (yes I have a tv in the bathroom :)), and the day after the BB championship game they bumped them for US women's soccer. I was disappointed. I'm not a huge M&M fan, but in that 15 minutes I get a sports big picture view for the day.

M&M get bumped to ESPN News when they are bumped on ESPN2.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

Question of the day time.

Which event coverage is more over-hyped -- the NFL draft or NHL trade deadline day on TSN?
