The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

The alternate D II Play-Up Belt, due to shootout 5 years ago won by UAA over MTU, was contested on Thursday but remained in AIC's hands. The fact it was won by Bentley today will be shown in the update after the rest of today's games.

If anything it would be D-III play up, the NCAA ruled that St. Thomas did not need to make an intermediate stop in D-II so they were never a D-II.

They are D-I provisional, meaning they aren't eligible for the NCAA tournament until 2026. I think for Belt purposes they should be treated as D-I.

Thanks. There are no D-III schools (Clarkson, SLU, RPI, Union, RIT, CC) on their schedule his year, however should they meet one prior to officially becoming D-I, I would think they are eligible for the D-III Play-Up Belt.

Any other opinions?

This is something we haven't had to face much in D-I hockey because the D-II schools don't need to "transition" upwards if their athletic departments move up (c.f. Merrimack).

St. Thomas is no longer eligible for a D-III tournament in any sport, so I don't think we can call them D-III play-ups. Wins against them count as wins against a D-I opponent. But they can't participate in the NCAA Tournament. They exist in a bit of a gray area. I'd argue that we treat them as a full D-I for Belt purposes. They can offer athletic scholarships to students in all sports. They are members of a Division I all sports conference (albeit ineligible for the league playoffs).
