Allegorical in the creation story.

History written by the victors in the OT. Psalms is pretty cool. Maccabees is somewhat controversial.

True in the NT - Rome was there to collaborate facts. But the resurrection is faith. Without it, Christianity loses its special status.

If you believe in the bible then good for you. What is the point of this thread other then to create an opportunity for a flamefest?

Cause we all know religion isn't a divisive topic.

Somewhere in between sounds interesting in that it is an alternative to being real or fiction. Not sure what else there is, but, hey, this is USCHO.

Maybe we can keep it together. At least for a while. :)

The OT is the Hebrews' origin mythology like you'd find with any culture. In fact, most of the stories are cribbed off earlier cultures' mythology, because there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9).

The NT is the in-house story of the Christian founders as written by later Christians. At its most real it's like the Congressional Record, where later authors reserved the right to "revise and extend their remarks." In general it's like any organization's sanitized corporate handbook, except instead of fudging the numbers they fudge miracles.

Obviously, all the supernatural stuff is either the pre-scientific mind of the time reaching for a "divine" explanation for natural phenomenon (most of it), or just straight-up cynical edits and invention to give the faith some pizzazz (Virgin Birth, Resurrection, Ascension).

And at the end of the day it's a literary masterpiece so it's a tremendous addition to human culture. Just don't take it literally.

Great myths have a deeper truth that transcends the literal. It is "real truth" even if not historically accurate.

When people start citing Joe the Plumber as authority for anything eternal, then we need either a good old biblical purge or a messiah who will deliver.
