The Beginning of new hockey leagues

Re: The Beginning of new hockey leagues

A lot of bad decisions occurred on his watch and at the end of the day the guy in charge has to be held accountable.

Another comment without any supporting facts or evidence.

Such as? No emergency plans for an Alaskan volcano? What else?

Re: The Beginning of new hockey leagues

I would tend to agree with you, but the rumblings were there after Minnesota & Wisconsin announced their departure.

A lot of bad decisions occurred on his watch and at the end of the day the guy in charge has to be held accountable.

Now the "National" Six have departed and but all accounts the consultants have blown them away with proposals and ideas. Its like a person that gets a new girlfriend/boyfriend and they suddenly realizes how bad the last situation was.

Good thing they put all those ideas in place before the event announcing the league....

The WCHA website

No social media

No League wide TV contract or cable channel

The Referee Situation

Expanding the conference to 12 teams

Working out a compromise with Sconnie & Goldie

Hiring consultants to guide the conference

Coming up with a plan to keep North Dakota & DU happy

He never come on USCHO or any other platform to answer fan questions

Unable to land Notre Dame

I'm sure the departing schools have many other beefs with the guy, but I'm not an "insider." I hate to bust on the guy because he seems like a really nice person. But he was all talk - no action. And in this day and age of college athletics is either grow or die.

Re: The Beginning of new hockey leagues

In more than one interview (in period breaks on FSSN) McLeod left me with the impression that he thought the WCHA had its own rulebook or that the NCAA rulebook didn't apply to the WCHA.

Well I believe that they weren't ready to announce this thing yet, but Schlossman reported it before they were ready.

Plus things like this take time. They have two years to get their act together and I believe they will.

So they were going to continue to work behind the backs of the rest of the league members while putting on the happy face ;)

I'm guessing you're probably correct on the timing. I just find it terribly ironic that the reasons that they are pulling out of the WCHA seem to be unaddressed by the new league and makes them look rather petty and that they are the little kid that wants attention when someone else has the spotlight...

Re: The Beginning of new hockey leagues

The WCHA website Yes that is a problem.

No social media Yes that is a problem.

No League wide TV contract or cable channel Yes that is a problem. IMO, this will not happen if it does it will last three years tops. NHL teams can't draw ratings why would a college league?

The Referee Situation Sorry no. This is every where in college hockey.

Expanding the conference to 12 teams No. In fact bs. Please come out and say who didn't want to expand. Not your opinion but the schools themselves. No hiding.

Working out a compromise with Sconnie & Goldie In the old WCHA they would compromise. In the new league they will not compromise or very little compromise.

Hiring consultants to guide the conference Yes, good move.

Coming up with a plan to keep North Dakota & DU happy No. They didn't give the WCHA time. IMO, this decision was to hasty.

He never come on USCHO or any other platform to answer fan questions Does any other commish come here to answer questions?

Unable to land Notre Dame Please, Notre Dame? IMO, they are new to the arms race.

I'm sure the departing schools have many other beefs with the guy, but I'm not an "insider."

See above comments.

I have to believe this was a "controlled" leak and the timing [right before the 4th of July] was intentional. Would love to know the answer to this, one way or another.

If Schlossman broke the story early because of a scoop; props to him.

Or, they could be remaining quiet about their concerns so as to not publicly indict (and humiliate) the league commissioner that they'll still be under for two years.

However, the National has already talked about national media deals. There's what some may call "a clue" about some of the concerns.

Glad to see we've got some agreement.

Look what the NHL is doing with Twitter, their awesome highlight videos [that bloggers can easily embed] and their seemless website that connects content from all 30 franchises. The NHL were also the first professional league that embrace bloggers because they weren't getting a fair shake in the mainstream media in many cities.

Things that didn't cost a lot of money, but connected their hard core fans.

First off... aren't these same problems that you list the WCHA as having EXACTLY what uphill mountain the new NCHC must face?

And to nit-pick some finer points. There isn't a "compromise" to be had with Sconnie or Minn. BigTen by-laws explicitly stated that if six or more schools sponsor the same sport, they must form under the BigTen banner. Kinda hard to get around that one.

And as for the "Wooing Notre Dame..." why didn't you guys keep them the first time around? :p

Seems that even universities are missing the boat on that one. The NHL has the ability to gamble a bit on these initiatives since they're the "fourth of four national sports" leagues.

The NCAA, maybe even College Hockey Inc., needed to imitate the NHL to set up examples, and they haven't (yet). It's a little difficult to get each University on board with the new social media if there isn't some examples laid out for them. The CCHA has gotten MUCH better since the departure of Anastos with their handling of social media, but it seems to have been curtailed the last few weeks.

I fully agree though that in today's age, there should be video highlights, blogs, and much more for each and every college team. But, we're still dealing with Athletic Departments that are run like Dollar Bill Wirtz. And not like Rocky Wirtz.

If it was a requirement that they form a Big Ten hockey conference, why did the Big Ten Presidents have to "vote" to approve it.

And if the presidents had to vote to approve it, could they not have presumably have voted, "No?"

I assume that Penn State got the "Atta Boy" from the Big Ten powers before accepting Terry's $88 million donation. Clearly the president's vote was a formality, but considering the upheval that ensued and the fact that some Michigan schools and communities may be impacted by this, Bruce could of busted his azz to fight this and perhaps save the WCHA.

That is correct, the Gophers and Bucky really didn't have a choice.

DU and UND had a choice and they chose to try and grab a TV deal, which they felt they wouldn't get in the existing WCHA(with McLeod) and without the Gophers and Bucky as part of it.

Re: The Beginning of new hockey leagues

Any comment or move about the New league obviously owes you supporting facts.

No, it was more of a snide remark at dg, who said to me in a seperate thread "Another comment without any supporting facts or evidence."

So, one snide remark deserves another: know what you're talking about next time.

They couldn't have chosen to propose a "hockey exception" to the "if six play the sport" rule? Did they even try that? It's such a convenient excuse, but it's just a league rule. They wrote it; they could lobby to change it.

I guess I didn't see the other thread. I'll man up on this and I apologize.
