The Battle of the Michigan Directional Schools 2010--Western @ Northern Feb 12-13

Re: The Battle of the Michigan Directional Schools 2010--Western @ Northern Feb 12-13

I will say this just as a bit of counterpoint, and keep in mind I just saw it on B2, not in-person.

I think NMU was dominating the 1st period. They had more possession and seemed to know where Western was going to go with the puck. 1st Western goal was off a poor turnover when the D-man tried to skate the puck out of the zone instead of passing it. Second goal was a PP deflection that went off an NMU player. Neither of those are high percentage saves, but I'm sure every goalie wants every goal they give up back.

NMU's 2nd goal was huge to say that they weren't going to allow one turnover and a bad bounce to doom their night. They took care of business and took the bounces out of the equation. Nice job by Ray Kaunisto using the body but not taking penalties. NMU also didn't get caught up with silly hooking or interference penalties.

Now it is time to go out and finish this series, unlike they were able to do against BG.

What do you mean video/replay screens? Wouldn't that cost about $500k?

NMU received grants for three high-definition camera's and a mobile systems unit which includes instant replay. This can be seen in action here at 1:27 into the video.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/492v57qoFAA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/492v57qoFAA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Our idea was to put projector screens up in the Berry like what was done at the Speedskating event. The feed on the screens would then be taken off the mobile systems unit, which includes three camera views and instant replay. The cost to rent the screens with labor is around 1k a day. I am not exactly sure what it would cost to purchase the screens for permanent use, but it would be a great investment because the athletic department could use the screens as a source of revenue by putting advertisements and commercials on it.

That is a great idea and certainly sounds like something that would work...but we're talking about NMU...not exactly the brightest bunch running the show in the Athletic Department.

I don't know if something like this would be a good investment for the school to be honest... I don't think it would generate as much revenue as you think... NMU can't even sell all their space on the boards... Marquette only has so much revenue to spend, and I think the town is near their cap... Adding a graphical advertisement capability has it's perks vs static ads, but I don't think there is enough possible revenue out there to support the two forms...

It would be great to have replay capacity in the Berry, but this comes in the "luxury" category... It's not needed to help the program preform... Now if someone wants to donate it, that would be just super... I just don't think spending their own cash is the right way to go about this...

It would be an incredibly foolish move to make that "investment." From which budget does the athletic department initially take this money? Recruiting? Salaries? Travel? Now where do you bring in the additional revenue to absorb the cost? Remember, most of the sponsors who would spend that kind of money to support NMU hockey are already doing so. Shifting dollars from dasher board, on ice, program and radio advertising does no good. You would have to generate $20,000 in new ad revenue, money that is not currently coming in. As for the bunch running the show, I'd be more than willing to bet that you'd find them a bit brighter if they were getting yearly budget increases as opposed to cuts due to declines in state revenue.

I believe that as the economy grows (slowly but surely) and additional companies set up shop in Marquette, sponsorship will grow. That's one thing about the schools in the U.P., we are for the most part isolated from larger cities, and therefore only have so many avenues for sponsorship and funding, and all three universities are competing for those limited sponsorship opportunities. They can try to expand by asking more non-traditional companies (Pioneer Surgical or STS consultants come to mind). I'm sure that MGHS or Bell Memorial sponsors NMU sports, but if they don't that would be a good advertisement for another non-retail/non-banking company (just like Detroit Health Systems advertises for the Red Wings).

Just a thought... I'm sure these avenues have been explored.

Can't wait for Saturday at YOST!

I didn't see how attendance was this weekend, but based on what I have seen in the past on B2, I wouldn't advertise at Berry Events either. You have to have people in the seats to sell advertising, regardless of the manner in which the advertising is presented.

Re: The Battle of the Michigan Directional Schools 2010--Western @ Northern Feb 12-13

For those wondering about the reason that the whistle was blown with 16 seconds left with NMU in possession of the puck on a delayed penalty against Western, it was ruled that the NMU extra attecker came of the bench too quickly before Stewie got to the bench. Therefore an illegal substitution was called against NMU and the play blown dead. The faceoff was placed in the WMU zone because of the delayed penalty being assessed against the Broncos, which superseded the faceoff placing that would have occurred if there were just an illegal substitution. Good job by the stripes on this tricky ruling.

Thanks for the clarification.
