The 2015 Triple Crown!

Re: The 2015 Triple Crown!

I was surprised that AP to win payed what it did, I can't remember but I think it was $3.50 on a $2 bet. Nice payoff considering the odds. Am I the only person that wasn't pulling for the triple crown? I liked Frosted and wanted to see him win. Had I bothered to bet, I probably would have gone with the exacta, even then the $4 (boxed exacta) would have paid $13. I'm not really a gambler, and stick to minimum bets.
I absolutely never bet on horse racing. it's too easy for one jockey to purposefully cheat and the average fan and even the stewards would never know.

On the rare occasion when I go to the track, I bet, but only $2 here and there. The last couple times any of my friends and I went, we just bet amongst ourselves. The twist? Everyone throws in a dollar, and bets on which horse will finish last.

As much as I love the hockey up here in Michigan, I miss the thoroughbred racing in Maryland. I set myself a limit when I go to the track, usually $40. If I loose I feel I got that much entertainment value out of it, if I win, that's cool. I never come out too big of a winner, but I also never regret blowing all my money at the track. I've never done OTB, because I wouldn't find that as fun as being at the track (although my horse allergies might prefer it).

Amazing split-screen video of AP and Secretariat running the Belmont. What an amazing horse Secretariat was.

This is incredible and a nice find. By far, the best of horse ever, I would have loved to have been alive to see Big Red in action.

His Stud fees now probably are going to make whatever farm that puts him out to stud an ATM. Hopefully, no shenanigans will happen to him like what happened to Alydar.

Also another great find. I never knew this. I also would have loved to see the battles of Affirmed and Alydar. This is such a shame and shows what happens when you mix ego and money. I hope those involvded (if still alive) aren't able to live with themselves and take care of their own undoing. And then Alydar is there to kick their souls down to the nine levels.

On a side note, I don't think AP is the best horse of the last 37 years, although he won the TC. He was definitely the best of this crop, but in 2004 Smarty Jones was an incredible horse, Silver Charm (1997) was also incredible horse, and Real Quiet (1998) was simply a freak. Those are the best three horses in my lifetime never to win a TC. Sunday Silence rounds out the superfecta.

Can't really say how a race with both in it would go. The pace would be different then their respective triple Crown winning races. Maybe being pushed by Sec., AP would tire out or run faster.

As far as pure speed, Smarty Jones was the fastest, but given the long running distance of the Belmont and that it requires more of an endurance horse to win, I think AP is definitely a better horse. The quality of the ride on him, and the ability of the horse to remain relaxed is a big deal. A lot of horses feel all the excitement on race day and leave half their speed in the stall.

I remember watching Secretariat cross the finish line, and at the time I thought he was the best ever, but now even though I never saw man o war run, I'd put man o war first and secretariat second.

The upset of Man O War by Upset was such a big upset that the origin of the term "upset" is frequently, and erroneously, attributed to that event.

Horse racing held more of an interest in my family than in most. My maternal grandfather actually trained and raced standardbred race horses throughout the country. There was certainly a lot of excitement in our family as we watched that '73 Belmont.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Secretariat's margin of victory in the Belmont was akin to winning the Indy 500 by something like 15 miles, which is like 6 laps. Obviously very different races, but I always found that funny.

Thanks, that’s cool stuff.

Secretariat at the Belmont and Bob Beamon in Mexico City remain for me the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen real time.

Comparing the times is interesting. After a quarter mile, Secretariat’s pace is already 1.05 seconds ahead of American Pharaoh. Doesn’t sound like much, but at the speed they’re running that’s about 7 lengths. After a mile, the gap is 3.7 seconds, about 25 lengths:eek: American Pharaoh actually ran the last half mile a bit faster, by 1.05 seconds.

While it seems like Secretariat took off over the last half mile, he actually slowed down, but the other horses slowed down more, probably because of the brutal pace. And if horses have human emotions, that’s gotta be demoralizing, to be gassed and watching the leader just cruising.

American Pharaoh was amazingly consistent; his fastest quarter (the second) was 24.15; his slowest quarter (the first) was 24.65, within 0.5 seconds.

I suspect that pfvietnam is a spambot that just extracted that sentence so the links in his signature could appear, as if posters here are likely to click on Vietnamese links.
Interesting. I really thought it was an odd post, but I didn't bother to look at things like the post count or signature. You are obviously correct, as always. Thanks Ralph.

It's a bot used to bump some Vietnamese plastic company's search counts. If you do a Google image search on the string in the sig it shows all photos of their products. Very strange.

You haven't been noticing the errors that I have been making in dates and locations of RPI games in thread titles recently. :)

That is most interesting. I figured that it would probably be more harmful than just increasing their hit count.
