The 2015 Triple Crown!

jericho

mascot extraordinaire
Finally, the 37 year wait is all done. First one in my lifetime. What a great moment for me as a horse racing fan. I can't stand Baffert, but I am happy for the horse and the sport in general. Great race. Only 2 seconds
slower than Secretariat's record...

Re: The 2015 Triple Crown!

Phenomenal race.

A couple of us saw it at the bar, even got audio.

Our thoughts during the race: fast start....ok he's holding....holding....wait, holy sh* he's holding BACK....ZOMG he's gonna do it!

Glad I finally witnessed one.

Re: The 2015 Triple Crown!

I saw the Twitter explosion later and found it on youtube.
I'm not big on following the horses, but have been kind of fascinated by the sport since reading Ralph Moody's "Come On Seabiscuit" 30 years ago. That book should be required reading for every undersized, frustrated middle school kid. Seriously. Hillenbrand's version was a cheap knock-off.

Thanks for the link Geezer. I'm not a fan of the ponies, but that was epic.

Re: The 2015 Triple Crown!

It's amazing to think Secretariat's Belmont time would've beaten American Pharoah by 15 lengths.

Re: The 2015 Triple Crown!

It was especially fun for me because yesterday I read this whole explanation of how the only smart bet would be to bet on every horse to win except American Pharoah. Could've almost called it based on this guy's foolish certainty that it was impossible.

He almost had it. I mean, if you expected to win some good money on AP...you are not smart. EVERYONE was going to bet on AP. However, thinking AP wasn't going to win...also NOT the smartest (although a fair argument). So, if you were going to bet...bet on Frosted or Materiality or something. A mid-fave.

Of course you're right. When I read the argument, I confess I was actually applauding the guy's good sense. But then it turned into a teachable moment about gambling.

I don't gamble on sports as much as I have in the past (part due to legality, part due to responsibility). And I wouldn't have touched AP today. I took Materiality on a guess, but knew that was a true gamble. Not a skilled/well-informed bet.

I was talking about the same thing at work today. Coworker had said "somebody made bank today!" I replied "probably not, odds were so bad that it would've nearly impossible."

Re: The 2015 Triple Crown!

Either way: American Pharoah is getting laid.

Or at the very least, access to plenty of horse porn, buckets and someone with a kind of ****ty job.

Re: The 2015 Triple Crown!

Well first, that was not a fast start. Pretty mediocre actually. if he had run the first furlong in say 23 and 2 that would be fast.
second, the way to bet this would have been via an exacta with AP first and then boxing the other horses on subsequent tickets. however with the third place horse a real long shot you chances of a big money payoff with the trifecta etc would be fairly low. But you could have gotten paid if you were sharp.

It was a fast start relative to the field, not necessarily historically. There is a clear distinction there.

I was surprised that AP to win payed what it did, I can't remember but I think it was $3.50 on a $2 bet. Nice payoff considering the odds. Am I the only person that wasn't pulling for the triple crown? I liked Frosted and wanted to see him win. Had I bothered to bet, I probably would have gone with the exacta, even then the $4 (boxed exacta) would have paid $13. I'm not really a gambler, and stick to minimum bets.
