I believe that 2003 is the only time the #1 overall seed got "shafted." I guess this year's situation would be one of first impression for the committee. I'd love to think they'd reward the top overall seed...and if that was at the expense of BC having to come out "west" then even better. As you said, we will not likely know this year...maybe next.
I would point out though that Mankato was an at-large team, where New Hampshire would be an auto-bid, and only there because they won their conference tournament. To me, that gives the committee the little bit of tilt to keep BC out East and "punish" Minnesota with New Hampshire. Especially when you look at the committee's history. I'd also point out that the committee is always changing. That could easily push the decision one way or the other.
The only instance in recent memory that I can think of where the #1 overall got shafted like that was in 2003, and I think the committe realized how unpopular that move was. If you'd like to know what I really think they would have done, I think they would have moved BC. We'll never know.
