The 2014 Inaugural NCHC Frozen Faceoff: This One's For All the Tostitos..

Re: The 2014 Inaugural NCHC Frozen Faceoff: This One's For All the Tostitos..

I've guessed about 8000.. I figure 6000 Sioux fans or so, 2000 for the other 7 schools.

During the DU/UNO series this past weekend, I saw a few DU jerseys on Thursday night and NONE on Friday or Saturday.

Not a single one. It was so evident, I started looking for them, even.

Opinions will vary but I think there are plenty of viewing spots at the The Loop (not super close to TC though), Huberts, Kierens, The Depot, not sure about O'Donovan's, Lyon's Pub, Cowboy Jack's and I can't think of the name of the place near the end of the rail line - maybe Sneaky Pete's?
There are tons of places, but not good for watching a hockey or basketball game.. I will be at sneaky Pete's Friday afternoon after work with some friends. Smalley's is actually one of the better places downtown to watch a game.

If it's not packed all to hell. For the F4 after the Twins game, it was unbearable. Couldn't move at all. Trrrrble.

Yeah I've been to Smalley's once and it was wall-to-wall humanity. It sucked.

For those local, it used to be Chammps, IIRC. And that was awesome. Alley bar and live music, etc. Now? Wouldn't touch it.

The Loop Bar is pretty cool it's in the North Loop on Washington Avenue North. I want to say about the 500-block of Washington Avenue North. Other good places up there are the Smack Shack, Fulton Brewing, Be'Wiched Deli, Cuzzy's and Darby's. I've heard good things about Black Sheep Coal Fired Pizza and Bar La Grassa. The North Loop would be a bit of a hike, especially on a cold night.

I live in the North Loop and all of the places you mentioned are really good (with the exception of Cuzzy's and Darby's). The Loop has a lot of screens and there is a new place called the Freehouse that is basically right across the street. Has great food, makes their own beer, and has many screens in the Bar area. Black Sheep has great Pizza, but you won't go there to watch a game (no TV). BLG is fantastic, but opens at 5 and you need reservations to get in (also not a game spot). Fulton is recommended for their beer, and the usually tasty food trucks parked outside, but check their website for hours.

And a walk from the North Loop area to Target Center would take about 10-15 minutes depending on your speed/intoxication level.

I only said that because it actually has TV's you can see. I agree it was better when it was Chammps. Old Chicago use to be my favorite place when I got out of college many moons ago. The new place sucks now.

If people want great wings Runyons on 1st ave and Washington is great. If you go there just remember it is pricely. They have no happy hour, but they do mix a strong drink. That is also close to all the places that are in the north loop other people mentioned. I am old now so I don't hang out downtown unless it is for a twins game/concert or it is a happy hour after work. If it is a happy hour I usually go home by 7pm and the only reason I even go out to a happy hour down there is because my office is downtown.

We're staying at the Marquette; should be good, yes?

Good wings? Strong drinks? Sounds like my kind of place.

You know what's gonna be funny. Seeing hockey fans walking around with girls dressed with barely anything going clubbing. Plus it's gonna be a blast hanging out with all the weirdos around downtown.

I agree with you on this. The venue in Minneapolis sucks, but the "sightseeing" and location are great. Venue in St Paul is about as good as it gets, but I really have no desire to go anywhere else down there besides the tailgate lot.

I've heard the NCHC tout the floor at TC that is raiseable...so they are able to raise it for hockey making the sight lines better?

Did they have this floor when they hosted other hockey a decade ago or those UMTC - UW-Madison games most recently?

Marquette is the worst city I've ever been to. Even worse than Houghton.

The town where your team plays is one of the true scenic gems in college hockey, actually in all of college sports. It ranks just below Fargo and Brookings on the places everyone should see list.

Still better than Houghton and Marquette, which isn't saying much if you've been to either.

Correct, the floor raises up the first row of blue seats, maybe 6 feet or so. I wasn't in there during the last game but I believe they have to in order to fit the ice in. Also the boards are new for this tournament and I want to say the ice went in at the end of January. If you check out the Target Center Facebook page, they posted a neat time-lapse video of the basketball strike, ice in with boards, boards removal, and setup for some Disney show. The video shows the floor raising and lowering.
