The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

A long, long time ago
I can still remember when Gerbe never made me cry.
And I knew if I had my chance,
I could do a Beanpot dance
And maybe I'd be happy for a while
But 2008 made me quiver, with every goal Gerbe delivered
Bad news on Babcock, a Beanpot was no longer a lock,
I can remember that I cried when I witnessed our lack of pride
Something touched me deep inside the day our Beanpots died

So why why did our Beanpot die?
Took the B line to the Garden but the dynasty was dry
And good ol' Jack was drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This was the night I saw Gerbe dive
This was the night I saw Gerbe dive

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

This tournament has struggled to maintain its relevance IMO. In part because BU had dominated it for so long. BC is now the culprit.

Bingo. Until you start seeing a legitimate toss-up for a tournament it will not go back to the days of old. Harvard or Northeastern needs to win the **** thing.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

NU would have won (decisively) in 2011, and maybe last year, if it had a legitimate D1 goaltender. Now it has one. Really!

Uh, NU would have beaten the most talented (not "best") BC team in recent years "decisively" if they had a different goalie between the pipes? If you had a better goalie, we don't know how that game would have unfolded. Could have been an entirely different type of game, more tight checking, etc. NU may have won, but I'm fairly confident it wouldn't have been decisive.

No way we win last year, that team was terrible. 2011 if you switch Rawlings with Witt we might win but that was a pond hockey toss up. Either way, we lose because of futility not because of bad luck choosing goaltenders.

The fan boys wouldn't recognize a good lyric if it broke their wrist. :D

Must spread rep...

Since Gerbe's first dive BC is 11-1 in the Beanpot

I think you can make a better argument that the 2011 NU/BC semifinal might have been different with Witt instead of Rawlings. BC scored 2 "cream-cheese in the oven" soft goals in that one.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

I'm thinking next Monday night's game will be low scoring. BC seems to be focusing more on defense and goaltending lately and has been real good of late. Also Witt seems to be in a zone also.

The difference may be special teams play and mistakes that lead to goals. Whoever takes the early lead first has the advantage. Coaches emphasizing no unnecessary penalties.

I thought BC played NU in the final in '11? I'm getting old and losing it but I thought that was the wacky 7-6 overtime game that was followed up by the 7-7 game at Conte the ensuing Friday.

Witt is a million times better than Rawlings, but this year's BC team is also much better than last year's team.

It would be hard for BC to sweep a team as good as NU 3-0 in the season series, but I do think the Eagles are better overall... and Demko is emerging as a legitimate #1 goalie, which helps, too, in terms of matching up against Witt and his ridiculous save percentage.

Should be a good show.

You're right about the 2011 game being the final. Why Cronin never pulled Rawlings from that game is something I'll never understand. Muse was having a bad night; Rawlings was having a worse night.

Totally agree with the last sentence. If nothing else, we can both agree that the two best teams in Boston are in the championship (even if one of them is from Newton).

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Hey
At least he's calling it a beanpot now that they've won 4 in a row -- for his first decade here it was the p!sspot :D

True! Caring at all for winning the pot was an iron clad determiner of fanboyness. Somebody's moving those goalposts! :D
