The 2013 Poser of the Year Tournament...it's Coming....

Re: The 2013 Poser of the Year Tournament...it's Coming....

I would back that idea.

Honestly, I'm still surprised that nobody has figured out how to save a list of user names and post counts for over a year in a spread sheet or something, and then put in the new year's tally to see who would have posted the most for the year.

Having been a former PoTY organizer...too time consuming. As it is...the current format is time-consuming enough as it is.

You wouldn't have to do the whole member list, just everybody that's over say a 1000 or 2000 posts. If somebody starts off just under the cut off, and then goes on an impressive tear to be in the top 100, then they just get that much more of a bonus boost for coming in with a bang. Thus the system would be rigged to reward the newcomers as we mock them. ;)

Paging Ralph...

Can you implement a rule that anyone who actively campaigns for the "honor" is automaticaly disqualified?

I would love to discourage that. Can't really stop everyone. However, I will be continuing to limit the number of contestants you can vote for in each round. Seeing people voting for 9 of 10 posters in a bracket always drove me crazy.

I like that alteration.

I could do it, but board would ban me for hacking the database to run a query on it.

The other rules (how the groups are formed, etc) are kept secret (or have been in the past). The qualification rule was easily figured out/revealed years ago.

It's a complicated system involving scraps of paper and a hat.

Wouldn't you merely need to take a snapshot of post totals on, say, 12-31-12, and then another on 12-31-13, and then just calculate the difference? Or is that information not readily available?

Is there any way to ask the Board to provide that as a courtesy? after all, these kinds of contests increase traffice to the website which increases their hit count which increases what they can charge advertisers, no?

Re: The 2013 Poser of the Year Tournament...it's Coming....

You calculate each posters RPI and then put them in to bands of 10 to form the groups. :D

Poster RPI = (total posts for year *0.21) + (posts per day avg for year *0.25) + (Posts responded to by others % *0.54)

Poster RPI is modified so that responses from red rep posters doesn't negatively effect their RPI.

No points for starting threads? phew.

There's no way to get a data dump of user information from the site, it's just not going to happen. First, they run the risk of sending out information that people might want to keep private. Second, the traffic increase isn't going to be new posters, it'll be the same people that are already here. And given how they like to play by NFL rules and limit the fun on the boards, the people running this site just are going to be in for it. I'm sure there's someone in board/admin group that wants to kill the Poser tournament as being disreputable to USCHO or something. They're certainly not going to help facilitate it.

I don't recall seeing a memo reminding us to limit fun on the boards. I'll have to check again.
