How is the Andrews verdict absurd? I understand plenty of people dislike her (the supposed fling with Bret Bielema and whatnot), but she had a reasonable expectation of privacy in her own hotel room, and the video of her was/is all over the Internet - millions of creeps presumably beat off to it.

Besides which, it will definitely get reduced on appeal, as is customary. And the guy who filmed her certainly won't have the money to pay his share, because he'll be lucky to have any job at all with his felony record.

I think the argument with Flint is that a majority of Michigan voters put Snyder in the governor's office (twice!), so we the taxpayers of MI should all have to pay the piper and clean up Flint's water. If we're really POed enough, that's what the recall process is for.

It's absurd because she didn't suffer damages of $55 million. This happens all the time and I hate it. This has nothing to do with her and everything with these astronomical judgements. While I don't want caps on judgements like I have advocated in the past, they should have a basis in reality rather than some creatively arrived at sum.

I hate these stupid judgements.

Don't have the link but the average award in a wrongful death case is about $3M, that's what makes $55M absurd.

Half of it is from the pervert, so you can knock it down to $28 million. It'll be appealed down to a realistic number. One of the jurists said he was thinking of his wife going through this. That's not going to fly with the appeals judge.

A Republican congressman on the House Committee on Financial Services thinks Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), one of the most vocal advocates for Wall Street reform, needs to be “neutered.”

Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) made the comments during a panel discussion at an American Bankers Association conference Wednesday. According to Politico, Luetkemeyer said people needed to “find a way to neuter” Warren, whom he called the “Darth Vader of the financial services world.”

Wrongful death cases are cheap. Anything where someone is still alive and can claim future damages are always going to cost more. In this case, I'm sure part of the claim is future/ongoing emotional distress.

The biggest driver of medical malpractice premiums is the fact that when doctors Fark up, their patients no longer die immediately but instead require years or decades of ongoing medical care.

And if Gawker wants to appeal, Florida law states they have to bond the original judgment amount into escrow, up to a maximum of $50MM. They might be turning out the lights.

McConnell may be selling out the Senate to save his skin.

"If the senators start to move off of this position, the biggest problem they are going to face is going to be a loss of support … they’re going to alienate the most active part of their constituency," said Adam Brandon, president and CEO of FreedomWorks. "I want Mitch McConnell to see that the potential grass-roots army is far stronger than anyone on K Street." […]

Ouch. The calculation is highly suspect in terms of the long term goals of the GOP. Holding the line would make more sense with a strong top of the ticket that could mitigate damage; instead, doing this with Drumpf or Cruz as the nom is playing with fire since we could see additional Senate pickups beyond the expected 4-6. Combined with a Hillary election that's a recipe for two (Scalia and RBG) highly liberal SCOTUS appointments in those two years. The (still distant) possibility of a House flip would eliminate the terrorists from power altogether and give the Democrats an open field to get government working again and convince all but the Dead Enders of the insanity of allowing the GOP near power until they are toilet trained.

According to a newly released analysis by the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, senate races in Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Missouri and North Carolina are looking to be more favorable for Democrats than previously predicted as moderate and independent voters grow disillusioned with the GOP.
