That doesn't show how a furlough (where they will likely receive back pay) will "kill" the economy.

In the meantime, all those people will pay their bills and buy things...how exactly? Promising to pay sometime in the future? That works.

Hey, give me $100K and I'll pay you back sometime in the future.

So you're saying that .3% of the population (who apparently will completely stop spending) for a couple weeks will wreck a $15T econonmy.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

It is when you take medical care away from those who can't afford it. They basically stop getting it then. But, you go ahead and bury your head in the sand.

You're not taking away medical care. You're taking away one specific procedure. You really would be more effective it you didn't serially exaggerate.

You mean like how Churches don't get money from the government?

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Still disagree. Cutting Planned Parenthood is just about the same as overturning Roe Vs. Wade. It's the only issue the Dems EVER show any backbone on. I bet dollars to doughnuts that if that wasn't in this bill the Dems would have caved without even blinking.
Their portion of the federal budget is a pittance. If it's that important to fund it to the Left, have Soros take care of it. It's chump change to him.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Budget deal reached. Short-term CR coming up to tide us over while they finish the paperwork.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Sounds like no cuts to PP and $38.5 million in cuts.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Actually, technically the government IS shut down right now because the House hasn't gotten together for a vote on the CR yet.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Ok. So we "saved" 40 billion. (Though knowing Congress, it means that spending increased 80 billion instead of the original 120 billion)

That's about 100 days in Iraq and Afghanistan. How about we leave there in the next 100 days and save ourselves another $40 billion in the 100 days following that? 8 and 10 years is long enough. Even the Russians learned faster than this.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

The funny thing about that withdrawal option is it takes months to move that many forces around - and that process also costs money. :D

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Money goes to Planned Parenthood for all sorts of things, so they can shift money around lots of ways. My understanding is that faith-based initiatives typically provide a specific amount of dollars for a specific function, and those dollars only go toward that. Big difference.

How is that a big difference? If I give money to a church to feed the homeless, that frees up money for them to get a new gold chalice for communion.

How is that different than giving planned parenthood money for breast cancer screenings, thereby freeing up other money for abortions? That's the GOP argument, and it cuts both ways.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Pretty sure we have these things called free clinics and hospitals where care is provided.

- and for the record I have no problem getting rid of the faith-based funding.
And this free money grows in their green housed attached, in the back.

So then there shouldn't be an issue with cutting funding to PP. The gov't is still going to wind up spending just as much. Everyone wins

You're not taking away medical care. You're taking away one specific procedure. You really would be more effective it you didn't serially exaggerate.

I am curious if either of you has ever had any experience in PP or actually know about it other than the abortion label? When I was a student I worked in one. It did not provide AB services altho it referred out if that was requested. The need for an AB is considered a failure. The whole point is to prevent the need and that is what PP is based on. In the clinic I was at this was truly the only option for accessing care for many of these women. If you are really against abortion/funding it, it would seem that blocking funding to birth control is an odd way to achieve the goal of not having it occur.

In a routine visit PP (in my experience, which of course is anecdotal) provided screen for cervical cancer, screen for STDs, teaching on prevention/risk of STD, tobacco cessation, nutrition, screening for anemia, BP checks, breast checks, skin checks, counseling regarding risk of alcohol and other drugs, mental health screening. If anything medical was found outside of the GYN realm then the appropriate referral was made for the patient to access care for what ever was discovered.

Pretty sure that without that thorough medical appt many of those people would have gone on to cost us (the taxpayers) mucho buckos if untreated. If this is purely $ then each kid that we helped the person prevent is not currently on the welfare rolls (and all this without ever seeing or assisting in an abortion).

Ask not what your country can give to you, but what you can give to your country.

A lot and a little

You and your kind with their...facts...you are not part of this discussion! It is obvious that PP is actually just another leftist commie organization that wants to destroy America by killing all the babies! You are too close to the forest to see the trees. All that stuff you cite is just a facade...Planned Parenthood is there to offer ABORTIONS TO EVERYONE!!

On another topic, I think it is about time churches and other religious groups started paying taxes.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

So, assuming this goes through without any shocking events in the next few days, what's next?

Rand Paul filibustering the debt ceiling vote? Aside from the real-world complications of missing that deadline, it would be entertaining to watch, kind of like watching the Titanic sucked down into the maelstrom.

You can't expect right wingers to understand facts, when their leaders are incapable of discussing them.

Jon Kyl, (R-Ariz. Huh, maybe this is why Bob is so incredibly wrong on his facts)

Statement:Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) stood on the floor of the upper chamber, telling the C-Span cameras and gathered attendees that abortion was "well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does."

This afternoon, CNN brought on Planned Parenthood's Judy Tabar to discuss his comment. During the interview, CNN anchor Don Lemon relayed a statement from Kyl's office walking back the comment, claiming the statement was not meant to be "factual":

LEMON: We did call his office trying to ask what he was talking about there. And I just want to give it you verbatim here. It says, 'his remark was not intended to be a factual statement, but rather to illustrate that Planned Parenthood, a organization that receives millions of dollars in taxpayer funding, does subsidize abortions.'

On a similar note, Jon Kyl, like 90% of Republican lawmakers, likes to sit in airport bathrooms and tap stalls for sex with men.*

*Not intended to be a factual statement, but to illustrate that Republican lawmakers, in the past, have gone into bathroom stalls looking for sex.

Handy... you forgot a couple of things... PP is a corrupt organization... PP ignores the law at its own leisure in line with its own moral system and not one codified by law.

For that matter... les, you did the same as handy... and you know these aren't isolated incidents. That being said, why does the gov't have to subsidize PP? If we agree something needs to be subsidized then why does it have to go to PP? Frankly, not one dime should go to that corrupt law-breaking organization.

I guess there's a difference between .orgs and .coms as to whether or not one gets money for being corrupt law breakers.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

What laws is PP breaking? In a perfect world, Abortions wouldn't happen, guess what?

So why is subsidizing PP bad but subsidizing all sorts of other so called "corrupt" groups good? (you know, the ones you and your Republican friends always subsidize) Oh and who decides besides the obvious people who know everything like you? Who is more corrupt, the oil companies we subsidize, the corn growers or PP?

Oh wait, PP is bad because they dont say TEH SEX IS BAD GOD SAID SO!!!11!!11!!111!

How about this, when religious organizations and big corporations actually start paying taxes then we can cut funding for PP. That seems like a fair tradeoff. Why should a house of worship get out of paying their share? Why shouldnt GE pay a dime in taxes? (instead of the $3 billion they got in Rebates)

The truth is, to a GOPer these days abortion is bad because it is less poor people to be soldiers. Without soldiers who will fight the wars? (that no one pays for)
