Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Even if liberals beat up the President for this deal, he wins. Nothing would help him more in his obvious effort to move to the center and appeal to independent voters for reelection.
The only thing that really matters

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

The TP caucus is apparently open to the deal IF there is an up or down vote in the House and Senate on a BBA. They don't need it to be passed, they just want every member of Congress on record. That could dent the 87 votes in the TP. There are 95 votes on the Dem side that aren't likely (CBC and Progressive Caucuses). A member of the CBC just called this bill "A sugar-coated Satan sandwich" which, while I don't know what that means, doesn't sound good.

The magic number is 216. Democrats are expected to deliver 90-100 votes, the speaker needs to deliver ~125 votes. If he can't even deliver half his caucus, his speakership is over. It's just a matter of whether the GOP wants to have an ugly fight before the election or let Boner serve out his term and then be replaced after the election.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Yeah he may have won the center...but the liberals are going to abandon his ***...well the true liberals not the "Vote for the guy with the D" liberals.

4 more years of this sellout...I know I am not voting for him.

The question will be can he motivate the base enough to actually vote and donate, because that's what killed the Democrats in 2010. At the end of the day, the 2012 election will be about who you DON'T want as president more then who you do want (so not any different than any other election in a 2 party system).

I think that many liberals are beginning to feel like Bernie Sanders Independent, somewhere to the left of the current Democratic Party.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

POTUS address at 8:40PM

Edit: AP reports the deal is finalized

There is nothing left about the dems...their whole platform is GOP-lite. They went from Socialists to Reaganites in two years lead by a sellout wolf in sheeps clothing POTUS!

I bet right now if Hillary challenged Obama he would lose and it wouldn't be close. Man was I wrong...he isn't even socially liberal anymore he completely abandoned his base.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Here he goes again. Ticking off both sides -- taxes & entitlements.

The next battle will be the 2012 Appropriation process. There are 61 days until we have the next shut down crisis.

EDIT: Just took a look at where we stand. The House (as usual) has passed out all but two of the Appropriation bills. The Senate, with the exception of Military & Veterans, has done (as usual) nothing.

POTUS: I want to announce that the leaders of both parties ... have reached an agreement that will reduce the deficit and avoid default
POTUS: 1st part of this agreement would cut about $1 trillion in spending over the next 10 years
POTUS: 2nd part "establishes a bipartisan committee of Congress to report back by Nov with a proposal to further reduce the deficit"
POTUS: I want to urge members of both parties to do the right thing and support this deal with your votes over the next few days.

Those are tweets from WH account

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Boner framework

Edit:
Requires baseline to be current law, effectively making it impossible for Joint Committee to increase taxes.
Same as House-passed bill, framework requires both House & Senate to vote on a BBA after Oct. 1, 2011 but before the end of year.
‣ Similar to House-passed bill, framework authorizes POTUS to request second tranche of debt limit increase of $1.5T if:
‣ Joint Committee cuts spending by greater amount than the requested debt limit hike,
OR
‣ A Balanced Budget Amendment is sent to the states.

Edit2: Don't know if this is Boner trying to sell this deal, but everything in the PPT presentation says Obama can "request" a debt-ceiling increase, it says nothing about it being approved...

So in other words, you're voting for the guy who wants to end all the advances in women's rights, reverse the repairs on our country's image around the world, repeal Roe v. Wade, make it legal to kill gays and minorities, throw senior citizens off a cliff, and destroy the environment? And you call Obama the sellout?

I would agree with you, but hey, if all those things are going to happen anyway, let's just get it over with now. It'll either happen slowly under the Dems or quickly under the Tea Party...let's just do it and move on.

He didn't say who he was voting for, just that he wasn't voting for Obama. That doesn't mean he will be voting for the GOP (or any other conservative) candidate.

You know the argument. A vote cast for anyone but Obama (or not cast at all) is a vote for Romney or Bachmann or whomever. Likewise, a vote for Obama (or not cast at all) is a vote against Romney or Bachmann or whomever.

It's almost as if the world's greatest deliberative body is living up to its name by being deliberate...If you want things to move more quickly, I'm sure you're for the abolition of the filibuster, right?

And then we wonder why the GOP is always in lockstep (the recent Tea Party being a major exception) while the Dems can't do anything and lose to someone like Dubya.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

So in other words, you're voting for the guy who wants to
end all the advances in women's rights, Please list what will be redacted
reverse the repairs on our country's image around the world, F them. If they don't like us, we turn off the fiscal spigot.
repeal Roe v. Wade, repeal and let each state decide via the legislature or the ballot box.
make it legal to kill gays and minorities, We do? Please list where it is legal to do so.
throw senior citizens off a cliff, We may have to do that anyway if cost > benefits, regardless of who is in charge
and destroy the environment? Global Warming?
And you call Obama the sellout? Remployment is the ultimate goal. If it means nuking a 3rd world country to get another term, they'll do it.

link?
;)
Really, who would run in opposition to "women's rights", and to "kill gays and minorities" etc. nowadays? The kind of people who make these accusations are the same ones who scream bloody murder and make all kinds of bizarre threats if someone points out that liberal policies are "socialist" (which isn't necessarily even a bad thing).

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

The other day Jonah Goldberg said this debt debate made him think about the passenger in "Airplane," listening to Robert Hayes go on endlessly about what had happened at Macho Grande: looking for that can of gas and a match.

We had a war about this. Your side lost. Get over it.

Leviticus
and destroy the environment? Global Warming?
Gut the EPA; make it more difficult to administer things like the Clean Water Act; Hire former members of the industry to "police" themselves

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Here's the White House version.

"Victory? Victory you say? Master Obama, not victory. The shroud of the dark side has fallen. Begun the Age of Austerity has."
