Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Just got this breaking news:
Dow caps worst week in a year with Friday decline

Wheeeeee!

Oh, and the vote on the Boner bill is scheduled for 6:30. Wonder if they'll even get the bill to the floor tonight.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Is this some kind of exam and they're cramming?
Do the fools (all parties) in the House, Senate, and White House understand this isn't a college class?

I'm wondering if this is proof that our political system as constructed can't handle a 3rd party with any success. The Tea Party freshman may as well not be part of the Republican caucus, because the Republican leaders have to negotiate with them just as much as they would if they needed Democrat votes, and no one seems to be able to handle it.

If the Tea Party was a separate 3rd Party this wouldn't be a problem, the problem is that we only have two parties and that the Tea Party hold significant sway over the actions of all elected Republicans. Otherwise, the Democrats and traditional Republicans would be able to reach some type of agreement on this and I suspect that things might actually get done.

The Tea Party is becoming known for issuing primary challenges and winning. You have the whole non-tea Republican caucus scared to death of losing their jobs.

Correct. Then the country could function as the true GOP could behave normally without threat from the tea party (the real RINOs).

They are about to. There's a procedural vote to amend Boehner that's being defeated right now. After that, Boehner will pass (otherwise he wouldn't have brought it to the floor), and then it will be immediately killed in the Senate. So, they wasted three days posing for Tea Party photos. We have about that much more time until we hit the wall.

And they'll spend the entire time complaining that the Dems are the ones ruining everything.

I'd laugh so hard if it still failed :p I wish CSPAN would tell us who is left to vote...there are still 35 GOP votes left, but are they TP or real GOPers?

The Reid bill will be taken up tonight as soon as the Boner bill is killed. The Reid plan not only has enough support to pass, it appears to have enough Republican support to prevent a filibuster.

Edit: And it passes. Currently at 218-204 with 11 votes left. The magic number was 217. How long will it take the Senate to kill this?

The Republicans' only hope is most of the country isn't paying attention and they spread their anger equally. That is not an absurd hope.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Final vote is 218-210. It looks like Nancy Pelosi was able to herd the cats and keep every Democratic member of the House unified. That's what an effective leader can do. Conversely, the speaker had to delay the vote 24 hours which even Fox "News" said was 'absurd.'

I still think the platinum coin idea is the one that will save us.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Senate is voting now. Should be a quick death.

McConnell told Reid that he will not compromise with him, only with the President. McConnell seems to be under the mistaken impression that Reid needs him to get passage of his bill.

He will need him to invoke cloture on the final bill.

I think Reid has the 60 votes regardless.

vote to kill the bill is 59-41

Edit: Based on this discussion I'm hearing now, he only needs 50 anyway.

Edit2: John Thune says he has enough to kill a filibuster
Appearing this afternoon on Fox News, Sen. John Thune (R-SD) said that if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) brings his debt ceiling plan up, it will get a vote in the Senate. In other words, enough Republicans would support Reid to prevent a filibuster. Thune also suggested that, if the Reid plan was “strengthened” it could collect 216 votes in the House, enough for passage.

Meanwhile, when they redo Schoolhouse Rock's "How A Bill Becomes a Law," I hope they include this.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

The senate vote is going to be at 1:01AM Sunday morning? WTF?

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Why not debate the bill? What are they afraid of?

Not one chance to amend the bill, not one chance to vote on its merits. This is not how to run a railroad.

So if Harry has turned the Senate into the Body of "No", he now has to come up with something that the House will say "Yes" to. If I am the Speaker, I'm done with dealing. The Senate has not passed one meaningful fiscal bill since Prince Harry took over. It's time to have him grow a set and do something other than nothing.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Boner has said he will no longer negotiate with the president.
McConnell will only negotiate with the president.

Wheeeeeeee!
