Re: Tennis...Anyone?

Generally I enjoy watching the final rounds of the major championships (the second set of Djokovak - Del Potro last night was riveting theater! :) ) but I just had to take a pass on Sharapova - Azarenka, it would be like sitting on an airport runway with a dentist's drill running next to your ear (though I suppose I could have watched with the sound turned off....except I like the thwack / thwack / thwack of the ball on the racket and the squeak / squeak / squeak of the sneakers on the hardcourt, it's a bit analogous to listening to raindrops in a weird way).

If Serena wins, I might watch her on Saturday, just to see if she can decimate Azarenka like she's been doing to everyone else. There is something a bit gratifying when the shriekers get beat soundly.

I wish I could find the link to the exhibition between Clistjers and Wozniaki in which they ridiculed the shriekers, it was pretty funny.

Re: Tennis...Anyone?

Every time I watch high level tennis, I'm amazed by how much range the top players have, not just in terms of straight-line closing speed like an outfielder, but also being able to stop and change direction and generate the same kind of closing speed the opposite way.

"Any two five elevennis?" :D -Victor Borge

Very interesting article. I've had goat milk and bought milk from an ***, but not that kind. ;)

You know what I would love to hear at some point? Radio tennis. Pick two of the most distinct grunters in the history of tennis, and have them play a game, complete with sound board for applause and racket hits and some dude speaking bad French for the judge. I would easily pick Martina Hingis for one of the players; who would be the other?

Re: Tennis...Anyone?

The Australian Open kicked off with #2W Maria Sharapova serving up two bagels to get things started. The highlight of the 1st round will be #10W Caroline Wozniacki vs Sabine Lisicki. Very tough draw. But nothing like Roger Federer. He could end up facing seven players in the top 150 if he gets to the finals. Prime time on Rod Laver Arena will feature native son Lleyton Hewitt vs #8M Janko Tipsarevic. #13W Ana Ivanovic takes the court in the nightcap.

As usual, DirecTV is providing ITV coverage of the event on Channels 701-707 and I understand those matches are also being televised on ESPN3. I prefer the ITV coverage of the tennis Slams because I hate having a director in Bristol deciding what match I want to watch, they actually show tennis during tennis matches not cutting to and from the court for interviews and the like, there are WAY fewer commercials and the commentators are there to tell you about the action on the court. Between matches they air the player press conferences which can be highly amusing, particularly Wozniacki's and Djokovich's.
