Team Canada U18/U22/ Centralized Olympic Roster

Re: Team Canada U18/U22/ Centralized Olympic Roster

"Busy day in Cow Town (Calgary) today. Flames GM Feaster canned and TC head Coach Dan Church steps down." Posted by OnMAA

Don't you think, steps down is a loose term. If you saw his Twitter post, it read: Heartbroken. That to me is not stepping down, that is a man that was forced out.

Re: Team Canada U18/U22/ Centralized Olympic Roster

I wonder if they will approach a Doug Derraugh as an emergency type coach. He has been involved with the team before and has a couple of Cornell girls with the team (Johnston/Fortino/Rougeau/Jenner)??? Thoughts?

Cornell Admin might take issue with that, especially since they would be left in the same position as TC, and are a strong candidate for NCAA post season play.

I doubt if they will look towards a current HC on a College team. If the HC is just a figure head anyways, who would want the job:

Probably, but as a Head Coach you would hope he has the last say. Here is an article with more info.....If you read between the lines, you can draw your own conclusions....

Jim Fetter and Laura Shuler come to mind but, as per above, are both employed.

Maybe Bothwell as a short term stop gap measure?

Just noticed Church's name has already been deleted from Team Canada's website and Bothwell is listed as being a "skills" coach.

Pretty sure Bothwell has been involved with the TC program for quite some time already.

I think that USA Hockey would be thrilled with Bothwell as coach....

I really don't have an opinion on his abilities. I was just surmising that he might be available, interested and maybe politically correct enough for Team Canada seeing as his name is presently on the list of the team's staff on their website and, as well, he has coached women.

Although judging by the Vermont thread a year or two ago (a.k.a. Brown Lite) one might get the impression that he was not a very good one.

So, you may have a point.

Interestingly enough the controversy in each thread died when each of those two coaches got the hook and each of them resurfaced some time later doing the same thing...ie: coaching in the CWHL. For those that believe in coincidences that might qualify as one.

Re: Team Canada U18/U22/ Centralized Olympic Roster

Isn't it a bit unusual that Church didn't meet with the team to break the news to them instead of immediately bolting to Toronto? That's assuming, of course, that the discontent came from some of the executives at Hockey Canada and not any of the players...which Church seemed to indicate. The reactions by some of the players would appear to confirm the same. If that's the case, wouldn't addressing the team have been the right thing to do...stiff upper lip and all that?

Or, maybe, not addressing the team was a jab back at Hockey Canada in retaliation?

In the interview with Marie-Philip Poulin at the first intermission of the US/CAN Calgary game, she seemed genuinely surprised, FWIW.

maybe, no longer being coach, he had no place to meet with them and no authority to do so

or maybe just being extremely frustrated ....

you weren't in his shoes, so stop judging his actions

I wasn't judging, I was asking. They were questions, not statements.

You of all people...Asking another poster to stop judging?

Would you be willing to do the same?

Re: Team Canada U18/U22/ Centralized Olympic Roster

Does Dineen have any experience coaching women at all? I can't find any. Does Hockey Canada think there is no difference between coaching men and women, either tactically because of the rules differences or in terms of motivation? Do they think Dineen is so awesome that these differences don't matter?

This just seems like a really strange choice. Granted, the timing of the hire means that they pretty much needed to find someone who was already out of work, particularly since you would think that after the Olympics HC would want to sit down and think about who they want and so the person hired right now is really just an interim coach through February. Since Dineen clearly wants another NHL job this does have the advantage that he'll probably clear out in three months without much hassle. So if it weren't for that trivial concern of actually winning the Olympics this looks like a brilliant hire.

But that doesn't seem like it ought to be the primary concern.

This is my take on it. If they need someone experienced to manage the bench during games, this might very well be a great fit. I suspect that the team is already picked, and coaches like Goyette can probably handle the nuances of the women's game, both motivation wise and tactically.
