Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

So I don't get in here often, but thought I'd check to see what the Tech friends and foes made of the Tok departure.

Apparently not much.
Well, I'm not pleased, but that's for other reasons.

Nice to "see" you, Mr. MacD. :)

Brassica napus Linnaeus—known as rapeseed, rape, oilseed rape, and in some cultivars, Canola—is a bright yellow flowering member of the Brassicacea family (mustard or cabbage family). It is a mustard crop grown primarily for its seed which yields about forty percent oil and a high-protein animal feed.

I hate mustard.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

ok, just for grins this is how I would beat Bc if I was wisconsin.
BC is quick, real quick and the have great puck handling better than anyone in the WCHA. but they are small. so for what it's worth.
1. I'd clog the middle and force them to go the full length without the benefit of the quick transition.
2. finish my checks, be physical. Don't let them cruise around.
3. crash the net big time.
4. use the points. they block a lot of shots. use the points and pass the puck after they drop down.
5. stay defensive, don't give them the odd man rush
6. stay out of the box at all costs.

Wisconsin can win if they do this, the last thing I would do is run and gun with them, though I bet that's what they try. I think that's a ticket to 2ed place.

One last thing. I couldn't believe how many pics Wisconsin ran in the offensive zone against RIT. Basically every time down the rink. Even if it is illegal, they got away with it.

Maybe, but I think Eaves & Wisconsin know when it's time to play a defensive game. I guess we'll find out tomorrow night.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

I was wondering what everyone else thought of all the pics. I remember umich doing it in the defensive zone in order to facilitate coming out, but I have never seen this number of them before or in the offensive zone before. Mostly it happens between the circles and the points, with the puck carrier circling around and the point man doing the picking.
Have I been missing this all along?
It will definitely have an effect on getting someone free for a shot.

The way you're describing 'pick', I assume you're not using it as slang for a turnover. What do you mean?

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Same concept as setting a "pick" in basketball. It would be called interference in hockey. Think defense man skating backwards with an on coming rush another offensive player has gotten in behind him and "picks-off" (runs into) the d-man. A blatant and dangerous form of a pick in hockey.

But done in a subtle way, like helping your team mate get a step on a player who is chasing him by making the opposition go a little wider, it would tend not to be called. Actually level the guy then you've got a pretty obvious call.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Here's a couple examples of a pick in Hockey.
I'm in my own corner with the puck and begin to carry it out. I'm say the left defenseman. If the left wing skates in such a manor that the man covering me can't stay as close and has to go well out to the side, basically I have wiped off the cover for this and now there is a free play because the cover man isn't there any more. I can pass or carry at my will because no one is within about 10 ft of me.
Without the pick I have a man hounding me every step.
As wisconsin does it. the forward in the offensive zone comes back with the puck toward the point, and the defenseman on the point skates so that the defender must either run into the defenseman or go to the side, freeing the forward to shoot unencumbered.

This FF game should be ample evidence that going away from the game plan when behind is just giving the other team the game. IMHO,You have to stay patient and try to chip away at the lead.
I see teams in the regular season stay patient but in tournaments and in the playoffs suddenly they get anxious and start pressing offensively. witness msu's win over Tech this year.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

After watching BC skate all over Wisconsin last night, I would hope MTU would consider a change in recruiting. For a number of years they've tried to build a big team that can bang and grind and it hasn't produced very good results. Maybe it's time to go with a bunch of smaller, faster boys ?? Speed causes mismatches and can't be discounted. It helps obviously if the kid also has skill to go with the speed, which was definitely the case with BC. Look at what Chris Conner did in his time at MTU. He was an opposing coach's worst nightmare because his speed created so many turnovers and scoring chances each and every night. Just think what he could've done if MTU had a few more guns on their team at that time.

Maybe the current staff has looked to do this, but can't bring these types to Houghton ?? If not, it's not a bad idea in my opinion.

Peter Rohn?

Peter Rohn?

Maybe, if he was anything more than the smallest grinder in the NCAA. ;)

And CC sort of plays that "speed kills" style, but it doesn't always work for them. It takes the right coaching staff to turn it into championships, IMO.

Doesn't matter though, because it wouldn't be Russell's philosophy to build a team that way. It'll take a coaching change for us to get away from playing the 1-2-2 system.

Ha. Love the old Caps logo. The flying W eagle too good to use?

One of these years, he should embrace one of the NHL's gimmicks and do a 'throwback' bracket with each team's oldest (or maybe crappiest) logos.

I, for one, would love to see the Kansas City Scouts in the playoff picture. :D
