SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Just wait until we get shootouts from our agent of change and all that is good and correct, the NCAA.

Unfortunately, there is little downside to losing a shootout. I like the idea of having wins worth 3, shoot out wins 2, and shoot out losses 1, and losses 0. That way each game has the same number of points on the line. I also don't like the fact that the NHL system counts an OT loss in the same way the count a shoot out loss. For me its all about the math, and the math doesn't work out. Games should be zero sum games. What you win, your opponent loses.

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

PLATTSBURGH — Most of the current Cardinals have never beaten Oswego, and they're eager to change that tonight.

Only four current players — seniors Kyle Taylor, Kyle Kudroch, Vick Schlueter and Matt MacLeod — were on the men's hockey team March 7, 2009, when Plattsburgh State last recorded a win in the heated rivalry. Since then, it has lost five straight to the Lakers.

That record bothers the Cardinals, who host Oswego and then meet fellow SUNY Athletic Conference opponent Cortland on Saturday.

"Oh, definitely. It's frustrating. It's our biggest rival," junior Patrick Jobb said. "They're a hell of a team, and it'd be nice to win one this weekend against them for sure. I've never beaten them, so hopefully this weekend's the weekend."

To turn things around today, the sixth-ranked Cardinals (5-2-1, 5-1 SUNYAC) will have to put the puck in the net, something they haven't done in 160 minutes and one second. They failed to score against Norwich or Middlebury during last weekend's PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout — the first time Plattsburgh had ever been shut out in consecutive games.

The Cardinals' last goal came in the second period Nov.19 against Geneseo.

Through its first six games, Plattsburgh had a healthy 4.67 goals-per-game average, and the recent drought hasn't changed coach Bob Emery's defense-first philosophy.

"No, I still believe it all starts and ends with defense," he said. "I'm hoping we can start getting some goals by accident."

Jobb added that the Cardinals haven't put any extra emphasis on offense in practice this week.

"I think we're just sticking to our game, what we've been doing all season pretty much," the forward said. "And just capitalizing on our chances, that's the main thing, I think.

"I don't think creating the chances is the problem; I think we just gotta bear down and make sure they go in."

At the other end of the ice, Mathieu Cadieux and Josh Leis each played one game in net last week, and Emery said he wasn't planning to name the starter for the Oswego game until today.

No. 2 Oswego (7-1-1, 5-0-1) has had to deal with an early setback in goal. After senior Paul Beckwith, last year's starter, was injured in the first game this season, junior Andrew Hare was pressed into duty. Hare, who appeared in two games last year, has a .923 save percentage and 1.94 GAA in eight games this season.

The Lakers beat Fredonia and Buffalo State two weeks ago and had last weekend off. The only smudge on their SUNYAC record is a 3-3 tie with Morrisville. Oswego is currently first in the conference with 11 points, and Plattsburgh is one point behind in second place.

Paul Rodrigues and Jon Whitelaw are tied for the team lead with 14 points. Rodrigues and Luke Moodie both have a team-high five goals.

"I know Oswego is probably the most opportunistic team we'll play all year," Emery said. "They can find the back of the net better than anybody. They're probably going to lead the nation in goals for.

"Hopefully we can just battle."

Cortland (3-6-1, 2-3-1) heads into the weekend winless in its last five.

Hopefully? Wow...doesn't sound like a lot of confidence coming from the coaching staff......

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Are any of the Oswego posters driving up to Plattsburgh tonight, and if so, do any of you have an extra ticket? I called the box office at Stafford and they seemed to indicate tickets go on sale at 5:30. I also was wondering if Plattsburgh has a good sub shop? Any suggestions as to where to eat are appreciated from our Platty posters as well as the ticket purchasing process.

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Remy - that is just coach speak. Subtly undercut his own team to motivate them while over delivering on the opponent. Tonight's game will be a brawl, like it always is, and someone will deliver some late-game heartbreak in a one goal game (hopefully a guy wearing green scores the late winner, of course!).

Tickets are purchased one of 2 ways:

1) Game-day beginning at 5:30pm in the box office, no sales by phone, and a max of 4 tickets per. OR...
2) Buy season tickets over the summer while "supplies last".

Is it ideal? Absolutely not, especially when 1200 of your 1924 tickets are season tickets, and another 200-ish are student tickets. This is also why our attendance counts are so skewed - those 1200 are counted whether they show up or not. :\

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Thanks for your response about the tickets! Any suggestions on eating places? I was in Plattsbugh last year on business and ate at the Ponderosa. I always enjoy the Oswego Sub Shop when I'm in Oswego. Any good sub shops? I've never seen a game at the Stafford. Should be fun!

McSweeney's for Michigans are a must!

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Actually Nate, it's 1200 season tickets and 400 student tickets. announced attendance for last years game was 2056, I know for the most part, there were people standing 2 or 3 deep behind the people with the rail spots.

As for your question Miner's Mark, there is Subway, JRecks, Quizzno's and a small place called Zukes on Brinkerhoff St that does really good subs.

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Thanks for all your responses! Prez, what did you like at McSweeney's?

The box office does open at 5:30. Tickets will go quickly. I can imagine the line-up will start way before that. EATING: Subway (4 locations), Jreck, Quiznos. Many other choices right on Route 3.

I think Emery was a little let down by the back to back shutouts, not to mention he knows Oswego is a stacked team this year. Platty lost their top two scorers last year and it's hard to make that up. The good news for Plattsburgh is that all their players should be back from suspension for this game. Wonder if he'll start them or make an example out of them?

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Norm,
Do you prefer Zuke's? I was just curious after reading the menu what Prez liked at McSweeney's as I'm leaning Zuke's. What intrigues me about Zuke's is the reviews for Zuke's seem to rave about the food and complain how poor the service is there. Is the help obnoxious?

The only problem I've had with them, I've written off as "over-stressed" - while locals certainly go there, their patrons nevertheless are primarily college students - and college students "attitudes" can vary by time of day and/or day of the week - and negative attitudes tend to be contagious - consciously or not.
Another thing to consider is if you are getting it for take-out, michigan’s, French fries, (i.e. warm food) is the primary menu at “Michigan stands” such as McSweeney’s whereas subs (cold sandwiches) are better suited to take out/eat some now and finish it later items (I often bring subs/sandwiches to the rink).

That’s just my food-for-thought ;)

Re: SUNYAC Supremacy-Oswego vs. Plattsburgh 2011-2012

Thank you! Given how long I may be on line for tickets the sub would make sense.

I'm pretty sure that making an example out of them is what the suspension was for ;)
