Re: subday scores

The Jreck Subs Company was started in 1967 by five Carthage Central High School teachers: Ellis Martin, Keith Waltz, Jerry Haley, Charles Lehman, and Robert Martin, who wanted to make extra money for their families. The first sub "shop" was a converted school bus that was parked outside the U.S. Army post in Watertown, NY. The business went so well that they formed a corporation in 1968 called Jreck Subs Inc., which was derived from the first letters of the five owners' names. After obtaining some financial backing, the corporation opened a bakery to produce sub rolls on a daily basis.

By 1974, there were twenty Jreck Subs Shops from Massena to Syracuse. Since then, Jreck Subs has grown to over forty stores in Northern and Central New York, and plans for significant growth are realistically close... Annual food shows put on by Jreck Subs Inc. better acquaint the Franchisees with various national vendors of both the food and food service equipment industries.

I was an assistant manager for Jreck in the early 70s right out of high school (CCS 71) By then the bus was gone and the Ft Drum shop was constructed out of a converted garage kit on the corner of Pearl St Rd just outside the village of Black River across from Gate 1. The first shops only offered 12 variety of subs, with the regular sub being its mainstay. The original price of this sub was 99 cents to beat the hot dog tax. This meant a restaurant food item under $1.00 was not taxed. When I started all food was then taxed, so the regular sub was raised to $1.29 with roast beef being the expensive meal at $1.59 ($1.70 w/tax) Charles Lehman was my freshman English teacher. Ellis was my sophmore English teacher, Keith Waltz was my Algebra teacher. I did not have Jerry Hailey as a teacher but he was my studyhall monitior in my junior year. Jerry's sister-in-law Betty was the shop manager in Carthage when I was assistant there. Robert Martin is the brother of Ellis Martin and is actually not a teacher but a CPA. Jreck's original tag line was "A meal for your money, not a snack"

Re: subday scores

I wish I could have a Jrecks sub. That's about the only thing I've been craving since surgery!

Are there any around anymore? There aren't any left in Oswego. I think I did stop at one in Watertown a few years ago on my way back from Lake Placid, but I don't know if it was there last year.

Jreck subs were great! Kicked the crap out of Subway. And don't even bring up Quizno's. They suck!

Is there still a Jreck subs in Potsdam? I may be going up there in January. Would love to be able to stop there. And of course, a pizza roll at Sergio's after a night of drinking...
