Still Complaining About ESPN...

More of a reason to watch the EPL instead of SC in the morning.

One wonders if Fox, CBS, or NBC will take a chance on a SC like show again. Lotta talent to try. Just costs more money than doing another action show.

I actually doubt it, since the major sports now have their own networks, and the major networks have their own priorities. For example, I wouldn't expect Fox to do much with hockey highlights at the national level, nor would I expect NBC to do much with MLB.

Which is kind of a bummer for the generalists out there. I'm not willing to choose a specific sport to only watch their highlights.

Probably not going to see TV like this again. Most people can just go to any number of options on the web to see highlights of any game/match they want to see. No need to sit through 35 minutes of show to see Sox/Tigers highlights from last night.

Also remember that NBC tried this with The 'Lights back in 2013 and no one tuned in.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Which is a shame, I really liked that show. Great for watching while on a treadmill at the gym.

But you hit the nail on the head for why even that great idea won't work anymore.

Yeah, but on the other hand, if I want to see highlights from around the league, ....

Well, in that case I'd probably be more likely to tune into a 15-minute show that just covered baseball highlights.

We're the last generation(currently ~28-35 years old) that used TV as our main source for this info. Kids born after that use the web. MLB has a list of scores/highlights on their front page. Just a few clicks get you there.

This is no different than our parents looking in the paper vs us watching the 8am SportsCenter.

Point taken.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Thing is it seems to be a regression in pleasing the senses in that at least SC showed highlights which I like to see. Before that your newspaper did not and I certainly don't look to checking out highlights when on my phone (although I will from a laptop).

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

The saddest part of this whole thing is that Barry Melrose still has a job...

This. He must have a bare bones contract or pics of ESPN in bed with an intern. He's awful. Terrible. Every time he opens his mouth I just turn off the TV.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

I wonder how long the NBAPA is going to let the players do the ESPN/Playoff/Disney movie commercials.

ESPN isn't even bothering to hide the fact that they are disney.

Fox tried with FS1 by hiring away Jay and Dan from TSN, where they were the faces of TSN's version of Sportscenter. The ratings weren't great and FS1 gave up on finding a SC clone. Instead, they hired the annoying talking heads ESPN already let go.

The reason I bring it up is that things are changing at ESPN. All of the other sports channels keep trying the talking head shows, so it's not as if they don't see an opportunity.

But over the last few years, ESPN has done a lot of dilute or remove what made SC great. So this isn't taking the classic SC on head to head- this is taking on an Entertainment Tonight version of SC on. And if there are more people out there like here- who would rather see highlights and news instead of more talking heads and massive coverage of a single sport or a biased coverage of a single conference- the opportunity is there.

ESPN is keeps walking away from what made them great, and what makes them appealing to many. Does anyone try to take it?

Right now, I'd start with the 6pm show, head to head. Just start with a half hour, even. If that works, expand on it. It's not that risky- ESPN only owns the NBA- getting coverage from other sports remains the same.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

One thing I thought FS1 would have been all over was trying to negotiate an additional game of the week for the NHL. Fox Sports has twelve NHL teams in the home market of of fourteen FS affiliates. Pick one of those teams playing on a Thursday and air the game.

MLB has the super-mega baseball contract with ESPN, yet allows FOX to have one game a week, and TBS (or they did) to get another game once a week.

I liked Final Score that Fox Sports had on the regional networks 5-10 years ago. Half hour show, straight highlights and a small amount of interviews, but no human interest segments or fake Italian restaurant sets with Barry Melrose.
