Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

So, saw Star Wars 8.

Spoilers:

I enjoyed it. It's solidly in third place after 4 and 5. Lots going on -- they didn't trim or indeed even bother to edit the script. Buddha Luke was fine. The comic touches worked. Emo Teen Keanu is going to make a lousy Emperor -- in fact the First Order is really hurting on talent, particularly in security. Rey having no parents was fine The action scenes were boring but a perfect chance to poop. Korean Mary Sue was cromulent. Benicio Del Toro makes a fine albeit expensive Billy Dee Williams 2.0; I'm sure we'll see him again. And I want that f-cking ring for the Resistance to Dump.

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

This prediction (which is a year old), if it came true, would completely restore my respect for Star Wars.

I can't overtstate how much I loathe Episode 1, and George Lucas for perpetrating it. It's the worst audience betrayal in movie history that I know of. To erase it (along with 2 and 3, which I haven't seen) and do films that are up to the level of the rest of the series, particularly to do it with the harshness and horror the author suggests, would I think re-establish Star Wars as a legitimate masterpiece, instead of a maudlin McDonald's toy franchise.

Perhaps do it in about ten years, after we have recovered from our own flirtation with the dark side and are looking back and deconstructing how evil can triumph when good men do nothing.

That would be most excellent.

Maybe they could do The Hobbit also.

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

I've been watching the Clone Wars series and am halfway through season 1.

It's not horrible.

This would be amazing!

Ask Gary Kurtz and Lawrence Kasdan to write or re-write the outline now!

It's inevitable. Disney didn't buy the franchise to just sit around and collect checks on existing properties. There will be stand-alone films, a prequel remake, and probably Episodes 10-18 featuring a black trans-female lesbian as the protagonist. :D

That speaks with an Hispanic accent.

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

So I haven't seen the film yet but my one friend I trust (who is taking me to see it when I get back from Mexico) said he liked it until he thought about it after the fact and now he loathes it. Said it looks awesome but the story is awful. He is usually pretty forgiving of properties he loves so it's interesting. He still hated Rogue One (or how to make a Star Wars film boring in two easy steps) more but he rated it quite low.

He left out the Luke spoilers but I read them elsewhere by accident and I can see why it is divisive amongst the fans. Very out of character.

I am looking forward to seeing it though to judge for myself. I like when directors take chances or make weird choices so I'm intrigued.

There are some BLATANT similarities to Empire at the end I didn't like at all. Didn't even try to hide it, like New Hope/Rogue One; at least Rogue One dressed it up a LITTLE bit, but for me, that's nitpicking.

The thing is Luke isn't the same person in his 60s as in his 20s. He has changed. A lot. I think one of the problems is that parts of the audience had the same expectation as Rey: he would come back and face down the entire First Order with his laser sword.

People we think are cool don't stay that way. Fonzie was awesome in his 20s, living above the Cunnngham's garage, double-dating the Polaski twins and hanging out in his "office" in the restroom at Arnold's. Who wants to see Fonzie at age 60?

Fonzie is probably hitting up the craft breweries now, trying to hit the Touchtunes like back in the day, thinking he's all that. Pathetic.

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

I had no problem with the portrayal of Luke at 60.

Nerds gonna nerd, I guess.
