I hate penalty shots.

Because there's no particular "penalty" involved"

At best, they restore a scoring opportunity that you had and was taken away. Most of the time, that doesn't result in a score.

The way it should work is you get the penalty shot. If you score, that's the end of it. If you don't score, then you get a two minute power play.

THAT would be an actual penalty for the rule violation.

It looked glum after the second period -- Duluth ties it up, and then scores a shorty. St. Thomas played tough in the 3rd, tied it up, and in the last minutes banked a shot in off of a Duluth stick.
Give the Tommies credit tonight. With Gascon stopping a breakaway and a penalty shot, it didn't look like a St. Thomas night. They may get pounded tomorrow but Bethany is smiling now.

The penalty involved is losing a clear scoring opportunity. Prior to the birth of shootouts, if you had a breakaway/penalty shot, the odds of scoring were high. You expected to see a goal on a breakaway. With the birth of shootouts, the pendulum has swung 180 degrees. I don't expect a goal to be scored. The scoring rate is under 40%, some folks on the web say it's around 33%. I do agree with you, if you don't score on the penalty shot, you should get a PP.
 
Overtime winner for St. Thomas. Who predicted a sweep in this series? By which team?
If Bethany continues to get her team believing in themselves we won't be hearing about Nadine Muzerall moving to the Twin Cities.
Duluth looked very out of sorts, but the spirit showed on the ice by St. Thomas was impressive. I look forward to next week when it's home and home with St. Cloud.
