St. Thomas 2022-2023 Still the New Kids on the Block?

In the article linked by HockeyBuckeye, there's a vague reference to multiple "configurations."
It was my understanding from the article that it was going to be a multi use facility similar to the Schott with hosting basketball, concerts, but unlike the Schott it will have BOTH men & women's hockey. Sounds like a scheduling headache!

I do want to make it clear that I congratulate St.Thomas on this wonderful development. I look forward to visiting the soon-to-be venue.
Thanks for clarifying your position; I feel I better understand it now.

When looking at the St. Thomas situation, I think that the plan for the new facility to be on campus, or at least how we think of campus for a metropolitan university where the city and the campus can intermingle, that would be a significant benefit to the student athletes, particularly if it will also be their practice facility. There is also benefit to the greater student population, as it makes attending events easier.

Most of the WCHA has already worked through this issue at some point after the league was founded:

BSU built the Sanford Center to replace John Glass (sp?), which was a move off campus;
UM built Ridder Arena and moved next door;
UMD built AMSOIL Arena to replace the DECC -- both off campus in the harbor;
Minnesota State moved from All Seasons (close to campus) to the downdown/riverfront Mayo Clinic Event Center (apparently, the wireless business isn't what it was earlier in the naming history);
North Dakota "solved" any remaining financial problems from building REA by taking its puck and going home;
SCSU renovated the on-campus Herb Brooks National Hockey (Concrete) Center;
Wisconsin built LaBahn (on-campus) to replace the adjoining Kohl Center and various smaller arenas scattered across the region that helped alleviate the multi-use conflicts.

Coach Muzerall was part of Laura Halldorson's first recruiting class at Minnesota. One of the things that Halldorson did at Minnesota was not just create a team but establish a program, one that included donors and a booster club. And yes, a new arena was built under her watch. My guess is that Muzerall wants to have a similar legacy in Columbus.

Lots of good info. As usual. Thanks for posting it.

If I have my finger on the pulse, the most likely outcome for OSU would be the LaBahn @ UW Model. Haven't visited LaBahn yet; I need to get that done.

Time frame? All Buckeye Posters are hoping for sooner rather than later. Which likely means it will be later rather than sooner. Regardless, we'll be here to support the program.

Finally, good thought on the Muzzerall Legacy. Hope it plays out that way. With plenty of banners to properly decorate the new facility. (Winking Emoticon Here)

I can't clearly exactly when the interview was but I do recall on it Coach Muzerall commented on how much the team really loved the old barn and had no problem with it and I had the impression she felt the same. If her opinion has changed since winning the championship I don't know.
If anyone watched ASU's men's team play in their previous venue, Oceanside Arena you would swear it and Ohio State's were built from the same blueprint. Even the same press box!
Here's a link to a page with a photo of it.

Who said it wasn't? As far as I know, every Buckeye fan who posts on this board is in favor of a new rink for OSU Women's Hockey. I certainly am.

But my original post was also truth, not spin. It was balanced, itemizing both pros & cons of the current facility. I stand by it.

And, the OSU Ice Arena seating is only the third least comfortable in the WCHA.

I bring a thick blanket to sit on. It's not women's hockey but I've been the sardine before at Yost sitting on their ridiculously narrow "assigned" bench seating enduring being squashed between two fat guys! I hope the Tommies new arena will have chairback seating throughout.

Last weekends series with Duluth was physically punishing. UMD was really pounding the St. Thomas players on the ice. There seemed to be a particular vendetta against Brieja Parent, who had previously played in Duluth. One of the goals UMD scored was while Parent was limping off the ice, having been mugged in the corner by two Bulldogs. It looked like St. Thomas was on a penalty kill, 4 vs 5. The refs had let things get out of hand, in my opinion. This will be a rivalry to watch in the future.
The game last night was just a case of being outmatched in speed and skill. Wisconsin played as dominant as they have in previous years against lesser opponents. Fatigue played a big part in the final score, as the Badgers exploded at the end of the second period. St. Thomas was trying to finish out the period without playing the full 20 minutes. Fatigue lead to unsound actions, which turned into Wisconsin scores.
There was some elation on the St. Thomas bench when it looked like the Tommies had scored a late power play goal. It would have been the first multigoal game against the Badgers, but ruled a high stick, and called off. The two teams finish their series today.

This seems to be a mandate from the league offices. Ludwig and Kaehler let yesterday's Minnesota/UMD get out of hand, too. The play that left Murphy down on the ice for an extended period was not only not a penalty, it was Murphy that initiated the contact, but there were plenty of other instances.

Wisconsin won again on Saturday, not a surprise, but only by a 3 - 0 shutout. The Tommies may have learned not to let up at the end of the period, but they learned a lesson about being ready to play when the puck drops. Wisconsin scored on their first drive up the ice, less than 30 seconds into the game. OUCH! They scored 2 more goals in the second period, but the Tommies were able to keep them scoreless in the 3rd period. Small things, but a much better game from St. Thomas than the previous day. All the WCHA Saturday games were close, now that I think about it. This next weekend St. Thomas goes to Bemidji, to see if they can continue to dominate the Beavers. It looked like good chemistry on the bench, even after getting pounded by the Badgers. We will see if there are any surprises during the playoffs, but I don't see many teams fearing to meet up with St. Thomas this season. Finishing above the bottom of the WCHA should count as a victory for this new D1 program however.

Even though the the season's over for the Tommy Bahama's they've got this to look forward to...

Summer Breeze

There also was improvement seen this season and there should be more to be seen next year as their freshmen class will add scoring and depth to their lineup.

I think that they'll be a totally different style of team next year. They certainly won't average 1.5 goals scored per game.

No doubt they will become a much harder out than what we saw for most of this season. Finishing fifth in the league next season, with some good goaltending and solid D-Zone play, could surprise.

They certainly have some rivalries established. Seeing Duluth beat up on an ex-Bulldog won't bring peaceful easy feelings to the rink when those teams meet again. And Bemidji will certainly have a chip on their collective shoulders. Another embarrassing overtime win for the Gophers will get their attention also. I am liking it! Not the pushover some forum members predicted when St. Thomas joined D1 hockey.
